In the Porgera–Paiala District at Aumbi, near One Sopa Bet, a fire happened yesterday late at night. Reports say that 19 people were burned in their houses.

Eleven people died completely in the fire. Eight other people were admitted into hospital because they were seriously injured or sick.

One man named *Jerry Wanpis*, from Kandep Muyan, reportedly started the fire after drinking b**r. It is said that he asked people for money to buy more b**r, but no one helped him. He then opened the petrol container/lid and used the petrol to set a machine or fire. Because of this, the fire spread and many people were trapped.

Police and local leaders are investigating the incident and the exact cause of the fire.

This tragedy has caused great suffering to families in the area. We are calling on the Government and Barrick to provide immediate help. Assistance is needed for emergency medical care for the injured, support for victims’ families, and help to rebuild homes and restore safety in the community.

Please act quickly so this community can recover and survive this tragedy.
