This Photographer Traded Treat-Catching Dogs for a Love Letter to Senior Ones
The German photographer Christian Vieler has now created a genuinely moving new portrait series, one that lovingly celebrates senior dogs in the very final chapters of their own lives. Rather than trying to hide away their grey fur or their more obvious signs of age, Vieler instead carefully captures each dog's own personality. It all serves as a tribute to their years of loyal companionship and devotion.
Vieler had actually spent years making people laugh with his shots of dogs caught mid-air, tongues flying as they tried to catch treats. This new project, however, is something far quieter, and somehow even more powerful too. The grey muzzles, the cloudy eyes, plus the little shakes are all left in, lit like the portrait of someone who has clearly lived a full life, feeling more like a love letter than photography.
Vieler has said that photographing these older dogs is simply very different, since they no longer pose forever, with some wandering off after just ten minutes and others gently trembling. You wait, you respect their own pace, and when one finally looks straight into the lens, the moment always hits that much harder, because you know it will not last forever, something made all the more poignant by his own recent loss of two dogs.
