- A TRAGEDY FORGOTTEN - GUINSAUGON LANDSLIDE
Twenty years ago today, the earth didnβt just move; it swallowed a community whole.
On February 17, 2006, in the quiet municipality of Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte, a massive section of Mt. Can-abag collapsed. In just moments, Brgy. Guinsaugon was buried under 30 feet of mud and rock. Over 1,100 lives were lostβincluding an entire elementary school filled with children whose voices were silenced mid-lesson.
Twenty years later, the scars on the mountain have faded into greenery, but the scars on the hearts of the survivors remain. We post this today so that their names, their stories, and this tragedy are never truly forgotten.
May we continue to learn, to protect our environment, and to remember those we lost. π―οΈ
