Toyota Celica GT-Four ST205: The Rally-Bred Legacy
Today, I got behind the wheel of something truly special — the Celica ST205 GT-Four. Not just a car, but a time capsule. A portal to the era of turbocharged legends and the golden days of the Year of Imports.
This wasn’t just another JDM build. It was Toyota Team Europe’s secret weapon. Developed for the WRC under strict Group A homologation rules, only 2,500 of these were built. Under the hood? A turbocharged 3S-GTE engine, water-to-air intercooler, anti-lag system, and full-time AWD — tech that made it one of the most advanced rally cars of its time. So advanced, in fact, that Toyota got slapped with a one-year ban in 1995 for what the FIA called “the most sophisticated cheat” they’d ever seen. Even controversy couldn’t dim its brilliance.
But what makes this car even more iconic is its place in Toyota’s evolution. The Supra, now reborn under Gazoo Racing, traces its roots back to the Celica line. The earliest Supras were Celica Supras — and the performance focus, the motorsport involvement, the DNA — it all started here. The GT-Four was proof that Toyota could dominate not just the streets, but the stages and circuits too.
Driving it today to a shoot wasn’t just a job — it was an experience. Every boost, every gear change felt like flipping through the pages of a motorsport history book. It was raw, analog, and beautiful. Like driving a legend that time didn’t forget — and I got to be part of it, even just for a moment.
