Another colorful resident of the reef is the Peacock Mantis Shrimp. They are exceptionally colorful, especially the males as they have bright blue-green bodies. They are about the size and shape of longish hot dog buns.

Mantis shrimp have the most complex eyes in the world. Their eyes are compound, like a bees with each having 'thousands of ommatidia - individual lenses and retinas that each sample a tiny area of the field of view'. Its eyes are on independent stalks so they swivel around continuously.

Most interesting is that while human eyes have three color cones (Red Green and Blue) the eyes of the Mantis shrimp have 16 different color-sensitive cones. This allows them to see an amazing palette of colors that we can't even begin to imagine.

Photographers have to be wary when photographing them because they have very powerful front claws that can strike hard enough to crack the lens of a camera or even break a diver's mask. Needless to say they pack quite a punch!

Aneomone fish come in many sizes and colors. They are bright and colorful, busily darting back and forth from the protection of their home anemone. For the photographer they are a challenge, as they rarely hold still long enough to get a photo as they duck in and out of their hone, Here are just a few from Puerto Gallera.

'Big Fish' at Sund Rock

Here are photos of some of the Lingcod that hang out here. This area enjoys marine wildlife reserve status so there is less of a fishing impact here than other places in Hood Canal, so it isn't fished-out like other locations.

Lingcod are an apex predator on the reef, with the females in particular getting so large that they appear to be sizing you for a meal. They don't as a rule bother divers except when males are guarding their egg masses, when the males will attack the unsuspecting observer that gets too close to their nest.

I returned to Sund Rock yesterday to do an end of the summer dive. This location is one of the best places to find Wolf Eels, in part due to its rocky habitat and also its status as a protected marine life area. We probably saw over a dozen wolf eels, this time there were no mated pairs, only solitary individuals.

Wolf eels are such friendly-looking fish, poking their muppet-like heads out of their dens to watch divers. Many, however bore the scars of violent encounters, probably from fighting with others of their own kind over dens. Despite their wounds, most will go on to heal and fight again another day.

My backyard sunflowers have finally started to bloom these past few days. Most people's bloom in late July and through August, but mine are always mid September or later. I started these in the greenhouse and moved them outside at about 4 inches tall, but it proved to be no different.

Regardless of time, the flowers are always lovely to see.

Our dive sites were along the famous Browning Wall on the northern side of Vancouver Island. Nutrient-rich water from the nearby Pacific Ocean flows through here in very strong currents, providing ample food for all kinds of cold water corals and sponges. These animals show their intense coloration under the strobes of the camera. Here are just a few.

Blowing my own horn.

My photo "methow pine' won another contest, the WSECU calendar competition for 2025. I've photographed this tree over many years since I first saw it in 1980. The tree is a bent-over Ponderosa Pine near Winthrop WA.
