On 19th-century ships, sailors gathered around a "scuttlebutt" a wooden water barrel with a hole cut into it for scooping drinking water. Much like modern workers chatting around the water cooler, sailors used this gathering spot to exchange news, leading the word to eventually mean gossip itself.
