This year marks my 7th year of joining the FUJIFILM Nationwide Photo & Video Walk. In each photo are the seven things the years have taught me, and maybe the reasons why I keep coming back.

1. Experience teaches you where to wait.
I used to run everywhere, afraid the photograph was always happening somewhere else. Now I know that sometimes the better thing to do is stay, observe, and let the moment come into the frame.

2. Growth can be counted in photographs you no longer take.
There was a time I needed 50 frames of the same scene to feel certain. Now, I am learning to trust the moment, and myself, a little more.

3. Not every photograph needs to begin with an idea.
Sometimes you arrive with a concept. Sometimes the street gives you one. Light shifts, people cross, reflections appear. You simply have to be there when the ordinary briefly becomes something else.

4. Seven years later, I am still learning.
Every walk asks something different of you. Perhaps learning photography is less about finally knowing how to see and more about discovering how many ways there are to look

6. The cameras have changed.
A phone. A Canon. A Fujifilm. A Sony. Maybe I should bring a Nikon next year to complete the circle. But after all those cameras, I know the most important thing I carry is still the way I see.

7. The people who first taught you to see never really leave your photographs.
You develop your own eye, find your own language, and eventually walk on your own. Yet somewhere in the way you notice light, wait for a moment, or compose a frame are traces of those who first showed you where to look.

A photographer in Davao can easily spend hours studying photographs made in New York, Tokyo, Paris, or Manila. Photographers, movements, exhibitions, books, and decades of visual material from elsewhere are readily available online. Looking for an equally accessible body of photographs made by Dabawenyos, however, is considerably more difficult.

HAYAG is a continuing effort to build an accessible archive of Dabawenyo photography while it is happening. Through themed open calls, photographs are gathered, selected, printed, and preserved as part of a growing visual record of how photographers see Davao.

01: KADAYAWAN
Deadline: August 31, 2026

Photographs of Kadayawan as you have seen, experienced, or remembered it. Beyond the major events, this can include traditions, performers, streets, vendors, gatherings, preparations, quiet moments, and everyday life during the festival.

Open to Dabawenyo photographers, whether you photograph with a phone, digital camera, film camera, or instant camera. Beginner or professional, there is space for your photographs in HAYAG.

Selected works will become part of the HAYAG Dabawenyo Photography archive, with selected photographs published in their respective printed issues.
