A Strong and Principled Leader
Vice President Sara Duterte has devoted herself to public service since 2007. Throughout her years in government, she has demonstrated firm, decisive, and committed leadership. These qualities have earned her the confidence of millions of Filipinos, as reflected in the more than 32 million votes she received in the last national elections and in her consistently high public approval and trust ratings.
Recent discussions have centered on the video involving Vice President Sara Duterte and Mayor Sebastian โBasteโ Duterte, with claims that the statements made therein constitute an impeachable offense. The issue has understandably become a focal point of the ongoing impeachment proceedings.
However, if those statements were genuinely viewed as an immediate and credible threat to the President or to national security, our laws provide established legal and constitutional mechanisms to address such situations. Appropriate criminal complaints could have been pursued if supported by evidence. Security protocols could have been enhanced. The institutions of government possess the authority and the responsibility to respond whenever a legitimate threat exists.
The fact that these remedies were not immediately pursued raises legitimate questions about how these statements were assessed by the very institutions charged with protecting the President and preserving public order. These are matters that deserve careful and objective consideration.
At the same time, our nation continues to confront pressing concerns that directly affect the daily lives of our peopleโrising prices, economic uncertainty, the increasing cost of living, and the need to restore public confidence in our institutions. These challenges demand the full attention and collective effort of government.
Leadership is often tested not during moments of comfort but during times of intense political disagreement. It calls for conviction, courage, and the willingness to speak honestly while remaining committed to democratic institutions and the rule of law.
Vice President Sara Duterte has consistently projected strength and resolve, even amid extraordinary political pressure. Whether one agrees with her positions or not, her determination and resilience are qualities that many Filipinos recognize and respect.
As we move forward, I hope that political differences will be resolved through our constitutional processes, guided by fairness, due process, and respect for democratic institutions. Ultimately, it is the Filipino people who should remain at the center of every decision we make.
