On the night of December 16, 2011, the heavens opened with relentless, pounding rain, drenching the city in a heavy downpour. Yet, many dismissed it as just another stormโexpecting it to pass by at dawn.
Before the first light of December 17, the river unexpectedly swelled. Torrents of water surged through, destroying homes and livelihoods, pulling the entire community violently backward.
In the flood, thousands of lives were lostโmany trapped or swept awayโand residents were displaced from their homes, their grief far deeper than the waters that consumed their neighborhoods.
Years passed, and the city responded with resilience. From the devastating loss, a floodwall was builtโeach stone laid with careful attention, lessons learned from destruction, and a strong will to protect future generations.
Today, the boulevard and floodwall stand as a bow,
Meanwhile, Maharlika Bridge, the arrow poised across the cityscape, serves as a powerful reminder: although life was once pulled back by tragedy, it is now released forward with renewed purpose.
