Lantana camara L. is a woody (F.), low, erect shrub. The leaves are ovately shaped with crenate to serrated margins, an acute tip (E.), and oppositely arranged (A.). Trichomes are present on the leaves and on the stem (A.). Umbels are in groups, and each has a slender corolla tube (B.). Petals have a concentrated color at the center, and the petals range from light yellow to pink (C.). An immature version of the flower can also be observed (D.).

With graduation right around the corner, I can safely say that I have nothing more on my mind.

Oh? Is that work knocking on my door? No, thank you!

Anyway, looking back at my previous posts, I diagnosed the morphology and performed taxonomy of the several plants I have documented, which aligns with my passion (great!), but I also provided general information about the particular plant. That’s great and all, but realizing this now, I think it’s irrelevant. I have this perspective, as a writer, that every word will be read by someone, even if it’s one; however, placing that in a cost-benefit analysis, it’s heavily costing me more.

Thus, the third phase of this activity will be narrowed down to taxonomy practices. I might also share relevant topics around plant and macrofungi taxonomy.

With a budget restricted to a camera and a passion for plants, I have compiled the trees I have documented for the past four months at the Bulacan State University.

Surprisingly, I was able to balance academics, thesis, and my love for plants. Every time after class, or when I have nothing better to do, I bring my camera with me and end up with neck pain afterwards. It came to a point where I was accompanied by some of my colleagues, namely, sila Kyeil, Rela, at Andreu. Also, thanks to Rela, I was able to take pictures of some of the trees in the overpopulated cottages of the College of Social Science and Philosophy.

The sole reason for why I made this was because I was a victim of plant blindness – the tendency to disregard plants or ‘rank’ them as less important than animals. The root could be: we humans don’t understand them, that they are “green,” that they apparently are motionless (even if they are not), and that they are non-threatening (Schussler, 1999).

With this small-scale project of mine, I hope to illuminate the plants within the campus and help biology undergraduates recognize their importance. Recognize how? You can always start by figuring out “who” they are first :))

Initial identification: 𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢, or Cutleaf Groundcherry

𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢 is a species of the Family 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐞 🍒. The paper-like covering of this species' fruit is the calyx (POWO).The phenological phase of 𝘗. 𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢 starts from natural floral anthesis until the flowers close, the corolla dries out, the anthers shed, filament falls, and 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭 🍈 (Figueiredo et al., 2020). Found in damp places, waste areas, etc.; this was found 𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 🛣️, growing along with species of Poaceae. Native to the southern part of North America and South America, and introduced to parts of Africa, Australia, and Asia, including the 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 (POWO).

Of all floral visitors, species of 🐝 𝐇𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚 – bees and wasps – visited this herb frequently in both mornings and afternoons. Other insects of Diptera, did not come into contact with the stamen, presumably due to the presence of ants (Figueiredo et al., 2020).

The other day, nag-decide ako na mangolekta ng nabubulok na dahon para kako pantakip sa lupa at ng hindi matuyo agad. While collecting, nakita ko ‘tong mga 𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙠𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙬𝙞𝙜𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨 of 𝘚𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘢 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘯 or Rain tree, I noticed the brown, sticky-looking, honey-like secretion.

Naalala ko agad yung resin sa libro ng 𝙈𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙗𝙮 𝙙𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙙𝙪𝙖 (1996), and I quote, “Resins - secreted in glands or canals often associated with essential oils and gums. Resins may be secreted naturally or as a result of mechanical injury. Resins are insoluble in water. 𝘗𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 sp. and most plants belonging to the family Convolvulaceae exude resins.” But I had to 𝙙𝙤𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙚-𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙘𝙠, as always, so this could be either resin or gum.

Initial identification: 𝘙𝘶𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘮, or Browne’s Blechum

𝘙𝘶𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘮 is a species of the 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐞 🌸 What I thought to be the inflorescence was actually just the stem with whorled leaves; not yet time to bloom. It can be found in open thickets, 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 on the ground beside shrubs and trees. Unlike R. luzoniensis, R. philippinensis, and R. repens, R. blechum is 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 in the Philippines and Taiwan 🌏

To the best of my ability, there has been 𝐧𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 󠀱🙅󠀱 on the symbiosis of R. blechum with other species. However, in the context of herbal potential, the aerial parts of the B. pyramidatum, as 𝐚𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 🌿, can be used for the treatment of diabetes and related diseases.

|| Animals in wetlands show us the richness of life in marshes and rivers. The Philippine Duck is one of the remarkable species that call these ecosystems home. 🦆

These vulnerable birds flourish across various wetlands. Republic Act 9147 protects them to support their growing population.

Communities and individuals work together to protect wetlands and champion biodiversity. This unified action secures the survival of wildlife for many generations.

This is hitting two birds in one stone kasi not only pinapatagal nito yung moisture, but nagdadagdag pa ito ng mga 𝙢𝙖𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙪𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 na essential sa growth ng halaman.

Tanong, anong species ang ginamit ko dito sa picture? Alamin niyo sa comment section :))

Initial identification: 𝘋𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢, or Cramp ball or King Alfred’s Cake 🍰

𝘋𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢 is a species of the family 𝐗𝐲𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐞. So far, most of the 𝘋𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢 spp. I have found, tends to have a shiny surface, ranging from a mixture of 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 ⚫ 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐬. What’s unusual and peculiar to me is that it grows in 𝐝𝐫𝐲, 𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 🔆, e.g., beside the road just outside of Gate 4. Nonetheless, these clumpy ‘cakes’ can store a 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫, allowing them to release spores even during dry weather (Roberts & Evans, 2011).

Gabriel et al. (2017) reported that 𝘋. 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢 was used by the Paliyar tribals for 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 🩹 and demonstrated anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and antioxidant properties.

In a biological sense, if you can’t adapt, you’re better off dead, honestly.

For example, ang primary rason ng pagpa-launch ko ng 𝐁𝐢𝐨-𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐒𝐔-𝐒𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 was never just to “educate” the public, but rather the officers – to educate, to enlighten the officers – kasi this is my last year eh. Gusto ko sana i-emphasize, or rather, tignan na ang Biology ay both research and education about all living life, hindi lang as “pre-med.” Baka naman sakali sa mga lower years, may gustong mag-Masteral or mag-research, edi nadagdagan na yung 281 researchers per million, diba?

Isa pa, hindi ko alam kung tapos na kami mag-report sa Parasitology bago ko ito i-post, pero yung pag-justify ko kung bakit gusto ko ng case-based activity instead of a “What is the” type of questions, crossword, etc., is because, from the very first day palang, we have been told na ‘Medical’ Parasitology ang magiging focus. So, if we’re in the subject of ‘Medical’ might as well situate the entire class in a 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥-𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨 (sa paper).

I owe it to my groupmates, who not only support my ideas – must it be in disagreement – but also recognize that they themselves have an opinion, have a stand on whatever discussion ang mangyayari sa grupo.

I will forever be grateful na mahal ko ang research. Hindi lang impossible maging tanga, mas impossible pang barahin ng mga kalaban ko yung argument ko dahil suportado ito ng mas malalim, mas masuring pag-aaral.
