The Hunch Backs (also known as Ngau Ngak Shan) is a challenging mountain peak in Ma On Shan Country Park, Hong Kong. It stands at 677 metres, making it the 12th highest peak in the territory. The mountain gets its name because, along with the main Ma On Shan peak, it forms a distinctive ridge that resembles a horse's saddle.

Popular Routes
The "Classic" Ridge Route:
Start: Heng On MTR Station.
Path: Hike up via Tiu Shau Ngam, which features steep rock faces (40-50 degree inclination), then follow the ridge to The Hunch Backs and continue to the Ma On Shan summit.
Finish: Descend toward Sai Kung or return via the Ma On Shan Country Trail.
Ma On Shan Village Start:
A slightly shorter but still steep approach starting from the Ma On Shan BBQ Area.
Key Highlights & Views
360-Degree Panoramas: On clear days, you get unobstructed views of Tolo Harbour, Three Fathoms Cove, and the town of Sha Tin.
The Saddle: The dramatic "dip" between The Hunch Backs and the main Ma On Shan peak provides some of the most iconic photography spots in the New Territories.
Safety & Preparation
Gear: Sturdy hiking boots are essential. Gloves are highly recommended for the scrambling sections, and long trousers can protect against thick, scratchy vegetation on the narrow trails.
Caution: There are signs warning of "Extreme Danger" on certain sections. While manageable for experienced hikers in dry weather, the trail becomes extremely hazardous when wet or during high winds.
Supplies: There are no facilities (water or food) once you leave the base of the mountain, so bring at least 2 liters of water..
