Alfa Laval Ballast Water Treatment System 💪
It’s a system made by Alfa Laval to treat a ship’s ballast water so it complies with IMO + USCG rules and stops invasive marine species from spreading.
1. *Main product name*
Alfa Laval’s BWTS is called *PureBallast*. Latest version is *PureBallast 3* and the new *PureBallast 3 Ultra* launched Q3 2025.
2. *How it works*
PureBallast 3 is chemical-free. It uses 2 steps:
1. *Filtration*: Removes large organisms/sediment >40-50 micron with an automatic filter
2. *UV treatment*: Ballast water passes through an enhanced UV reactor. Medium-pressure UV lamps + synthetic quartz sleeves kill bacteria, plankton, viruses by damaging their DNA
No chemicals added, so it’s safe for crew + ship equipment
3. *Key features*
- *Flow range*: 32 to 3000 m³/h for single system. Multiple systems can handle even higher flows up to 6000 m³/h
- *Works in all water types*: Fresh, brackish, marine, even low-clarity water with UV transmittance as low as 42%
- *Low power*: Runs at ∼50% power most of the time, ramps up only in difficult water. PureBallast 3 Ultra saves up to 19% power vs older models
- *Compact + deckhouse option*: Can be installed in engine room or in DNV-approved deckhouse enclosure for tankers with no pump room
- *Type approved*: IMO revised G8 approved + USCG type approved
4. *Why ships need it*
Ballast water carries organisms from one port to another. IMO’s BWM Convention requires all ships to treat ballast water before discharge. BWTS = Ballast Water Treatment System.
Alfa Laval also offers Compliance Service Package, crew training, and biological commissioning testing support
