Title: Tatay, Gusto Kong Tinapay
Form: Movie Poster
Theme: "Quarantine"
Visual Communicator: Drink Water Rivera
On April 1, a video has circulated around the internet and has been a talk on social media. A video showing a group of people scattered around EDSA demanding for food. It was shown on video the violence that happened while some of the residents are being dragged by the policemen. Based on CNN Philippines (2020), “they were apparently part of dozens of protesters shown on video that circulated on social media. Some of them held placards saying they have not gotten any help from the local government amid the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine to curb the spread of COVID-19” (par. 5). The Sitio San Roque residents have no choice. It is either they will starve to death or got infected by the virus. It is a matter of surviving in this time of crisis. No one can see their families crying for food and suffering from hunger. In relation to visual expressions of quarantine, This is the theme of my movie poster.
I came up with the title “Tatay, Gusto Kong Tinapay” adapted from one of the famous Pinoy clap game “Nanay, Tatay” from the point of view of the oppressed. Tatay means “Tatay Digong” and tinapay means food. A hand in fist, grabbing a piece of bread represents the leader who is expected to take care of his subordinates and stands as a father who supposed to feed his children.
In order to send my message to the public, I used Symbolism in creating this piece of art to visually express the ideas that I have in mind. Symbolism communicates message and ideas through different elements in the visual art. My intention in using Symbolism as an art movement is to reveal the truth to the viewers through symbols and to transform my thoughts into an art form. (Rivera, 2020)
