WATCH: Maayong pag-abot sa Cebu! Final approach and landing onboard Philippine Airlines flight PR1845, Airbus A330 service to Mactan. See puffs of condensation on the wing as we flare for landing, and hear the cabin announcement onboard as we taxi towards the terminal. In view are the new developments around Mactan Island, the wreck of the Korean Air A330 that had a landing mishap, and the new parallel runway 04L/22R. And what a fantastic greaser landing it was!

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ THE JETPROP OF THE PHILIPPINES | It was in 2017 when Philippine Airlines, and its subsidiary PAL Express, made history as the very first airline to take delivery of the first dual-class 86-seater Bombardier Dash-8 Q400. Back then, her reconfigured cabin provided a boost in capacity as the older Q400s that the airline operated only had 76 economy seats on board. RP-C5901 was the first to arrive in Manila from Toronto sporting the new cabin as a new era of turboprop operations for the country's flag carrier came into effect.

Mula Batanes, hanggang Jolo, well not really Jolo but Tawi-Tawi, these jetprop aircraft can be seen serving the flying public. The Q400, known for its speed and performance, has continued to be a game changer for Philippine Airlines, opening markets and rural airports to fast air link without the need for massive infrastructure adjustment that jet aircraft requires.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ 22 YEARS AFTER FLYING THE FRIENDLY FILIPINO SKIES, RP-C3227 LIES ROTTEN IN MACTAN | It was in December of 2004 when ship 3227 (MSN 2183) arrived in Manila after being leased by Filipino flag carrier Philippine Airlines. She was one of the original Airbus A320s of the airline meant to replace the Boeing 737-300s and 737-400s that used to ply city pairs back then. Her state-of-the-art avionics and new cabin interior were a game changer, and she was very well received by those lucky enough to fly her.

Originally delivered to Danish carrier MyTravel Airways as OY-VKP in April 2004, she was then taken up by Philippine Airlines and became RP-C3227. Equipped with two CFM-56 engines hanging under each wing, she was configured in an all-economy 177-seater cabin. In 2010, she was transferred to subsidiary airphil express where she was repainted to the airline's orange livery while maintaining her PAL-interior.

In February 2012, she was involved in a landing incident after a runway excursion following an unstabilized approach in Kalibo. I will be linking the video of the incident taken from the inside of the aircraft at the comments section, where you can notice the very late public address announcement of the cockpit crew seconds before touchdown. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the aircraft sustained no damages.

Following the rebranding of airphil express to PAL Express in 2013, she was repainted once again to the sunriser livery of the airline. There, she served until 2016 when, to the surprise of avgeeks in the Philippines, she was then taken up by low-cost airline Philippines AirAsia! Her transfer meant another livery change, and this time her interior was changed to an all-economy 180-seater cabin matching her sisterships in Cool Red.

Fast forward to today, 22 years later after she landed in the Philippines, she lies in a state of despair at the far end of Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Cannibalized and mothballed, her wings no longer carry the mighty CFM56 engines that once carried her airborne. Panels missing, cockpit windows removed, her fate remains unknown as she basks in the tropical environment of a coastal airport.

Ano kayang nangyari sa kanya? Will we ever see her take to the skies again? Time will tell. But for now, thank you for bringing us home, 27. Job well done!

IN PHOTO: Cebu Pacific Air flight DG6256, ATR 72 service to El Nido, taxiing towards runway 04R of Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Since the acquisition of Ayala-owned boutique airline AirSWIFT by Cebu Pacific Air, these yellow-tailed turboprops have mounted flights to El Nido from Clark and Cebu, increasing connectivity to the island paradise.

With the ban on turboprop operations in effect at Manila, these regional aircraft have been relagated to secondary hubs across the Philippines like Cebu, Davao, and Clark.

Delivered brand new to the airline in 2018, RP-C7288 is currently configured in an all-economy 78-seater cabin. With their Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) capabilities and cheaper operating costs than their jet contemporaries, aircraft like the French-made ATR 72 provide a feeder lifeline to rural airports from major hubs from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ FROM THE ARCHIVES: A look back towards the times when the CEOs, or Current Engine Option A320s and A330s ruled the Philippine skies. Less than a decade after this photo, all of the CEO A330s have been retired in favor of the more advanced A330neo (New Engine Option).

IN PHOTO: RP-C3348 as Cebu Pacific Air flight 5J112 to Hong Kong is about to enter the holding point for runway 06 as a company A320 wearing the airline's old livery takes off from runway 13. Configured in an all-economy 436-seat cabin, ship 3348 was delivered brand new from Airbus in May of 2017. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines, she served the friendly Filipino skies until February 2024. She was then ferried to Dresden where she underwent cargo conversion into a freighter.

She now flies for Mexican airline MAS Air Cargo as a cargo aircraft wearing the registration EI-MAZ.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ CANFORCE 3400, cleared for takeoff runway 06 | A Royal Canadian Air Force CC-330 Husky was photographed in Manila a few days ago. The aircraft came in from Singapore before flying to Clark Air Force Base and then to Manila, reason for the visit is currently unknown.

The CC-330 Husky is a Canadian-militarized version of the widely popular Airbus A330-200 passenger jet. Meant to replace the older, CC-150 Polaris for strategic transport and aerial tanker role, the Canadian government has 9 of these large jets which are expected to be fully converted into tankers in 2027. Similar to the mission of the A330MRTT, the Husky differs by having 5 of these airframes come from previous airline operators (Kuwait Airways) rather than brand new from Airbus.

This certain aircraft with tail number 330003 was the second Husky to be delivered to the RCAF. She was originally delivered to Kuwait Airways and often flew to Manila during her tenure with the Middle Eastern airline. As she is yet to undergo the tanker conversion, she laked the probe and drogue as well as the tail boom system and is only serving as a strategic transport for the Canucks.

Apologies for the heat haze as these photos were taken at high noon with a ground temperature of 39'c or 102'f.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ Philippine Airlines flight PR127 operated by the airline's first Airbus A350-1000 seconds from landing in Manila after completing her transpolar journey from New York as a company Airbus A330 waits for their turn to depart for General Santos City. While RP-C3510 proudly wears the company's 85th anniversary livery, it remains to be seen if the other new deliveries will carry the 85th stickers.

Powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines hanging under each wing, RP-C3510 features a tri-class cabin with 42 business class seats, 24 premium economy seats, and 316 economy seats.

Sa mundo kung saan fuel efficiency ang primary driver ng airline fleet planning, the visit of a Boeing 727 and a Pratt and Whitney JT9D-powered Boeing 767 here in my home airport came as a huge and pleasant surprise para sa inyong lingkod na spotter. These aircraft, once king of the jet age a lifetime ago, are now getting rarer as they fuel costs rise and they get retired in favor of cleaner and greener aircraft fit for 21st century aviation.

Enter the two classics operated by Malaysian carrier Weststar Aviation Services.

On top is a Boeing 727-23 trijet registered as N800AK s/n 20045. She was originally delivered to American Airlines in 1968 and spent most of her life in the United States. In 1988, she was re-engined from Pratt and Whitney JT9D turbojets to Rolls-Royce Tay 651 engines. O diba, parang A320neo lang! In 2014, Weststar took her in as a VIP transport and repainted her to match their first Boeing 727, VP-BDJ. Familiar paintjob? That's because VP-BDJ was Donald Trump's first Trump Force One before being replaced by the current Boeing 757. Weststar retained the majority of its paintjob, and as N800AK was meant to be a twin of VP-BDJ, she was repainted into the same color scheme. Unfortunately, in 2019, she was ferried to the United States and was scrapped and parted out in the same year.

Below is 2-TSSA, a Boeing 767-200ER powered by another classic engine from the jet age - the Pratt and Whitney JT9D-7. This engine family was the very first high-bypass turbine to power a widebody jet, and was instrumental in advancing twin-engine long haul flights under the ETOPS rule. Imagine kung wala itong makinang to, baka hindi tayo nagkaroon ng Boeing 777 o Airbus A350. The engine family was also the original power plant of the Boeing 747 when it first flew in 1969! Delivered to Australian flag carrier Qantas, in 1987, she underwent a VIP conversion in 2005 and was acquired by Google in 2006. After her retirement in 2018, Weststar Aviation took her in as their first large, widebody VIP aircraft.

These two are aircraft and engines that I never thought I'd be able to see or hear personally today, and I am grateful to have been able to do so.

Because plane spotting is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get. Thanks Forrest. 😁😁

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ UNDERNEATH A PINK SKY, the passengers and crew of Philippine Airlines flight PR 894 waits patiently for their turn to depart Manila. Operated by an Airbus A330 registered as RP-C8764, PR894 is one of two daily flights of the Filipino flag carrier to Taipei.

RP-C8764 was delivered brand new to Philippine Airlines on August 2014. Powered by two Rolls Royce Trent 700 engines, the aircraft has a tri-class cabin configuration with no in-seat entertainment. Streaming to your own device is enabled for long haul flights though.

Have you ever flown onboard ship 8764?
