A LEAP TO FINALS.
Brazil celebrates a goal against Spain in the FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup 2025 Semifinals — the goal that sent them to the Finals, and eventually the Champions!

All three players airborne at the same instant. You can't ask for this frame and you can't direct it. You track the scorer from contact, read where the celebration is breaking, and commit the shutter when the jump reaches its peak. One frame earlier or later and at least one foot is on the ground.

EGRET IN FAST FLIGHT.

Panning shot, Philippines.

Slow enough shutter to abstract the background into horizontal bands of color. Fast enough tracking to keep the bird as the anchor through the full stroke. The yellow bill is the one detail that confirms this is real — a Great Egret at full speed, not a studio composite.

First time I've nailed this technique after hundreds of attempts.

Worth a large print someday. 🖨️

CLUB COURT.

The ball is between his eyes and the camera. A split second from contact.

300mm from courtside. The compression isolates him completely — the tournament, the background, the crowd reduced to texture. Just the player, the ball, and the decision already in motion.

This moment exists at every club tournament, every weekend. You just have to be in position when it happens.

THE WINNER.

She already knows.

The ball hasn't landed yet. The foot is still in the air. But that expression tells you everything — pure, unguarded joy before the point is even confirmed.

WTA 125 Manila, Round of 16.
Alexandra Eala. Shot through the net at courtside, EF 300mm f/2.8L wide open. The net blur in the foreground is deliberate — it frames the subject and creates depth that a clean shot from the same position wouldn't give you.

The technical frame was planned.
The expression was a gift.

Those are the two kinds of frames in sports photography — the ones you build through positioning and anticipation, and the ones the sport hands you when you're already in the right place.

This was both.

Posted today as the tennis world celebrates her performance against Rybakina at the Italian Open R32. Some players make you a fan even in defeat.

FLAT-ON-COURT.
Not bouncing. Not mid-air. The ball at the exact millisecond it touches the surface — so precisely timed it appears to rest flat on the court.

Pre-serve bounce, WTA125 Manila. Down on one knee at courtside, watching her bounce pattern. She'd done it the same way six times already. I knew where the seventh would land.

The shot exists because of pattern recognition, not reflex. By the time you see the ball touch the court, you've already missed the frame. You have to be there before it happens.

This moment is rarely photographed.
