In a region shaped by the undulating geology of Mount Pinatubo lies MQ Residence, the home of a family of five and with frequent visits by their grandparents. Resting on a site located at the foot of mountain, the home resists the temptation to dominate the terrain. Instead, it learns from it.
What emerges is not a home imposed on the landscape but one that quietly navigates itself to the logic of the land. The sloping landscape, the gradual rise rooflines, and the distant mountain ridge establish a set of spatial cues that translate on the language of the home. The result is a house that unfolds horizontally across the site, composed
of layered volumes and softened edges, allowing the home to remain legible in its conversation with the land.
The composition of obscure volumes responds to its orientation with the elements. The orientation of the volumes and the introduction of vertical fins along the glazed façades reveal a careful reading of the sun to shield the interiors from harsh sunlight while still taking advantage of the Mount Pinatubo views. The stategic placement of fenestrations makes the house breathe and helps dissipate the Pampanga heat.
These obscure volumes created an ensemble of introverted and extroverted spaces. Provided by strategic choreography of movement in space, the home creates moments of delight. Courtyards and gardens
appear unexpectedly between spaces, turning the mundane into episodes of pause and reflection.
For a multigenerational household, this choreography provided opportunities for unimposed movement. It introduces ramps that gradually mediate the site’s elevation changes. These ramps extend the ground plane into the building, transforming circulation into a continuous promenade that mirrors its context.
Ultimately, the house does not rely on grand gestures to establish its presence. Its strength lies in its contextual responses to the landscape, elements, and its users.
