THE ELEPHANT CAVE ❤️ Puerto Princesa City
Tucked within the verdant landscapes of Puerto Princesa, Palawan lies a lesser-known yet awe-inspiring natural marvel — the Elephant Cave. Located near Karst Mountain in Sitio Sabang, this geological treasure offers a striking blend of natural beauty, ancient rock formations, and serene countryside vistas.

The cave gets its name from the elephant-like silhouette its limestone formations create—towering karst cliffs shaped by millions of years of weathering. Surrounded by rice paddies and lush greenery, the site presents a breathtaking and somewhat mystical scene.

Formed over 20–30 million years, Elephant Cave is part of the expansive karst landscape that characterizes much of Palawan. Its limestone cliffs and cavernous opening evoke curiosity and wonder, even if much of its interior remains unexplored by the general public.

Elephant Cave gained national attention in December 2012, when it was featured as a Task Location in Leg 11 of The Amazing Race Philippines Season 1. The Elephant Cave also appeared in International editions of The Amazing Race, including The Amazing Race Ukraine, further cementing its global appeal .

This visually striking and culturally resonant task showcased the cave’s natural surroundings, as competitors cracked coconuts under the gaze of towering karst cliffs and lush fields—a stark departure from the typical urban or riverine tasks.

Despite its fame, Elephant Cave remains inaccessible to public tours, as it sits on private land and with insufficient infrastructure for tourism. However, it’s a popular stop on Underground River tour itineraries, where travelers pause for quick photo sessions amid rice terraces and dramatic karst landscapes.

Although not open for guided exploration, the Elephant Cave remains a captivating landmark—enhanced by its moment in the spotlight on The Amazing Race. It stands as a testament to Palawan’s natural beauty and potential for eco-conscious tourism. Someday, with proper conservation efforts and controlled access, this site could become a must-visit destination for adventurers and fans alike.

PUERTO PRINCESA UNDERGROUND RIVER ❤️
📍 The Puerto Princesa Underground River, officially known as the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, is one of the most famous natural attractions in the Philippines. Located in the city of Puerto Princesa, on the island of Palawan, it is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

⭐️ Key Features:

Underground River: The river stretches about 8.2 kilometers long, making it one of the longest navigable underground rivers in the world. A portion (about 4.3 km) is accessible to tourists via boat tours.

Limestone Karst Landscape: The area features dramatic karst limestone formations, caves, and stalactites/stalagmites.

Cave System: Inside, the river flows through a complex cave system with large chambers, rock formations, and bats.

Biodiversity: The national park is rich in biodiversity, home to various endemic flora and fauna including monkeys, monitor lizards, birds, and more.

Ecotourism: Strict environmental regulations are in place to preserve its natural beauty, and tours are managed to minimize ecological impact.

⭐️ Historical & Environmental Significance:

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 due to its unique ecological and geological features.

Recognized as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2012 through a global poll.

⭐️ Visiting Experience:

Tourists typically reach the site via a short boat ride from Sabang, about 80 km north of Puerto Princesa City.

The tour includes a guided paddle boat ride into the cave, where guides share interesting facts and point out rock formations like the “Cathedral” and the “Holy Family.”

⭐️ Tips for Visitors:

Book early: Only a limited number of visitors are allowed per day to protect the site.

Bring appropriate gear: Life vests and helmets are required; audio guides are often provided.

Respect wildlife: It's a protected area—don't feed animals or disturb the environment.

ℹ️ The Puerto Princesa Underground River is not only a breathtaking natural wonder but also a symbol of the Philippines’ rich environmental heritage.
