Today, we join the nation in commemorating the 128th Philippine Independence Day, which marks the historic declaration of Philippine independence on June 12, 1898. This day honors the courage, sacrifice, and patriotism of the Filipinos who fought for our freedom and helped shape the nation we have today.

Independence Day reminds us that freedom is not only a part of our history but also a responsibility we continue to uphold. The sacrifices of our heroes call us to value unity, respect, and service to the country, especially in the way we live and contribute to society today.

As we celebrate this important occasion, may we be inspired to take part in building a stronger and more united Philippines for future generations.

This question has been on my mind latelyโ€”and I know Iโ€™m not the only one asking. Every time I look, it seems like life is giving me a list of what I โ€œshouldโ€ have done by now. I always wonder if I am on the right path. Or am I just making choices I'll regret later? Sometimes it doesn't feel like I'm taking my time at all; it feels like I've completely lost my way and am too far behind to ever catch up.

โ€œDi ko sila kasabayโ€”nakakahiya, nakakapanghina.โ€

Thereโ€™s something about these words. They stick around, living rent-free in our heads long after theyโ€™re first uttered. They sneak in when we scroll through social media and see classmates posting about their upcoming graduation, or when relatives ask, โ€œKailan ka ba tatapos?โ€ at family get-togethers. They weigh heavier when we see friends moving on to new jobs, new homes, and new chapters while we feel like weโ€™re still trying to figure out where we stand.

The pressure is suffocating. To see others move ahead while you seem to be going in a different way. Itโ€™s painful to be misunderstoodโ€”where people think youโ€™re a lazy child or unmotivated student just simply because you opted to take a break from school to support your family, or decided to take a break for self-healing, or chose to work before returning to school, or to support yourself because you want to. There is this unspoken rule that we all need to follow the same time line: finish school at 20, get a job at 21, build a career by 25. But what if that timeline doesnโ€™t work for you?

Life takes its time, donโ€™t feel youโ€™re lateโ€”
Others move ahead, but yours awaits.

In reality, there is no golden rule for how life should go. Different roads for different people and all the roads have a different directions. Donโ€™t think youโ€™re falling behind just because someone else reaches their goals before you do. It just means their road direction is different than yours. Some people will take 4 years to get their degree while others will take 6 or 7 because they had to work along the way. For some, they open a business right out of school. For others, they spend almost years trying and exploring things to find what they truly want. These paths are not incorrect; they are merely different.

We generally view life like itโ€™s a race, but it was never meant to be one. โ€ If you fall behind on someone elseโ€™s track, you are not a failure. Taking time for you or your family is not a step backwards. It is how you build your strength to keep going. Even the stops, mistakes and the delays have a way of teaching us a lesson that would have never come if we rushed straight through.

You have all the time in the world. It is not running away from you. It's just moving, waiting for you to grow, to learn, to work out what you really want. Success is not like a food that has an expiration date. And it definitely not like a project that have a deadline. When you graduate early, late or on time, go to work first, school first or build your own business, pause or keep going, what counts is that youโ€™re moving at a pace that feels right to you.

Trust yourself that thereโ€™s more to your story. Sometimes the best chapters are the ones that take the longest to write.

I began my journey carrying something both quiet and heavyโ€”an ambition not only for myself, but for the people who believed in me. Then, suddenly, the finish line that once felt distant is right in front of me: graduation.

And yet, thereโ€™s a different kind of pain in ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ต.

Almost reaching it.
Almost hearing your name called with Latin honors.
Almost giving your parents the recognition you once dreamed of finally handing them after everything.

For years, I carried that goal carefullyโ€”through sleepless nights, deadlines, exhaustion, sacrifice, pressure, and quiet battles no one really saw, holding onto a vision of what the ending might look like. Somewhere along the way, I held onto it so tightly that I started believing it was already mine.

Until one grade changed everything.

โ€œ๐˜“๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ โ€™๐˜บ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ,โ€ they would often say.
But what hurts was never just the title.

It was everything attached to itโ€”the sacrifices behind every passing semester, the late nights spent choosing to keep going, the dream, the vision, the imagined moment of hearing your name called, and the version of yourself that believed all that effort would lead there.

Letting go of that version feels like grieving something that almost became yours.

And maybe thatโ€™s the hardest part of ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ตโ€”it lets you see the finish line clearly enough to imagine touching it, but keeps you just far enough away to lose it.

I grieved for that version of meโ€”the one who thought she would graduate with Latin Honors, the one who pictured a different ending.

But I didnโ€™t stop there.

No honors, no medalsโ€”just grit, just prayers, and a quiet determination that no one really saw. And somehow, I made it through. Not with a medal, but with a story.

Academics matter, but they are not everything. The real world will challenge you in ways no classroom ever can.

Between disappointment and acceptance, I came to understand this:

A title may recognize achievement, but it does not measure sacrifice.
It does not hold every breakdown, every prayer, every moment you kept showing up when quitting felt easier.

Some dreams donโ€™t arrive the way we imagined them. And sometimes, surviving the journey becomes the greater achievement.

So to those carrying the weight of
almost with honors,
almost got there,
almost became what you hopedโ€”

To those who feel like they are โ€œjustโ€ graduatesโ€”you are not any less.

You are not defined by what you nearly had.

And one day, what feels like heartbreak now will become proof that you kept going anyway.

Let your journey be driven not by the need for recognition, but by the people who continue to believe in you even in your hardest moments. Sometimes, the meaningful success is not only in walking across the stage, but in refusing to give up when everything around you makes quitting seem easier. It is not just found in the title announced beside your name, but in the person you become while earning the right to stand at the finish line.

Because even in the middle of ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ต, you still arrivedโ€”and even now, you are still becoming.

You may have graduated without ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ,
but never without courage.

And that, too, deserves to be honored.

There are moments when loneliness appears in places where it should not exist.

Not in empty rooms. Not in abandoned streets. Not in the silence of midnight.

It arrives in the middle of conversations.

It lingers beneath exchanged smiles and familiar greetings. It is the quiet realization that someone can spend years beside us, hear our stories, witness our struggles, and still never truly know the person hidden beneath the surface.

Perhaps the deepest loneliness is not being alone.

Perhaps it is being surrounded by people and still feeling unseen.

Human beings carry entire worlds within themselvesโ€”private fears, unfinished dreams, silent disappointments, and questions too complicated to explain. Yet most of these things never reach the light. Over time, people become skilled at disguising what they feel.

The exhausted become "busy."

The grieving become "fine."

The overwhelmed become "strong."

And so the deepest parts of a person quietly remain unspoken.

There is a particular sadness in realizing how much of a life can go unnoticed.

A student may carry expectations so heavy that even success begins to feel exhausting. Friends see the achievements, teachers see the potential, and family sees the results. Few see the anxiety hidden beneath every accomplishment or the fear of no longer being enough.

An older soul may carry a different burdenโ€”the weight of becoming someone they never expected to be. Somewhere between responsibilities and survival, they begin encountering the ghosts of their younger selves, remembering dreams that once felt certain and futures that never arrived.

Yet the world continues assuming everything is fine.

After all, they are smiling.

They are functioning.

They are still here.

What makes this loneliness painful is not the absence of love. Many who carry it are deeply loved.

What hurts is the distance between what is visible and what is true.

People are often appreciated for their achievements, their strength, or their ability to endure. Meanwhile, the fragile parts remain hiddenโ€”the fears that surface at midnight, the regrets that revisit old memories, and the silent battles fought where nobody can see.

Sometimes it feels as though the heart is speaking a language the world has forgotten how to hear.

And yet, despite everything, people continue reaching for one another.

That may be the most beautiful thing about humanity.

Even after being misunderstood, people continue trusting. Even after disappointment, they continue hoping. Somewhere inside every weary soul remains a quiet desire to be seenโ€”not for what they achieve, but for who they truly are.

Perhaps complete understanding is impossible. No one can fully enter another person's mind and experience life exactly as they do.

But maybe understanding was never meant to be perfect.

Maybe it exists in smaller moments: in the friend who notices sadness behind a laugh, in the teacher who sees potential behind struggle, in the parent who recognizes a burden left unspoken, or in the stranger whose kindness arrives at exactly the right time.

Sometimes understanding is not having all the answers.

Sometimes it is simply choosing to stay.

To listen.

To care.

To remind another person that they do not have to carry everything alone.

And perhaps that is enough.

Perhaps the heart does not need to be completely understood. Perhaps it only needs proof that someone tried.

That somewhere, beyond the noise of everyday life, another human being paused long enough to truly see it.

And for a moment, the loneliness became lighter.

Every person learns the language of hiding before they learn the language of belonging. Some hide their tears behind laughter. Some hide their fears behind achievements. Some hide entire versions of themselves inside carefully chosen words, rehearsed smiles, and conversations that never quite reach the truth. And some hide who they love. Not because there is shame in love, but because the world has a habit of treating difference like a wound that needs healing.

He learned it in classrooms where jokes traveled faster than kindness. In hallways where masculinity was measured like a competition. In churches where certain prayers sounded suspiciously like warnings. In homes where acceptance often arrived with conditions attached.

He learned it from the comments people threw so casually, never realizing how deeply words could cut.

"Babakla-bakla ka kasi"
"Matalino ka sana, kaso bakla ka"
"Sayang ka, gwapo ka pa naman"
"Talented nga, bakla naman"
"Maging straight ka na lang kasi"

The sentences were different.

The message was always the same.

That who he was could never simply be enough.

That every achievement came with an asterisk.

That every compliment required a correction.

That every version of success would always be followed by a condition.

So he became smaller.

Not physically.

Spiritually.

He folded parts of himself away like old clothes hidden at the back of a cabinet. The softness in his voice. The dreams he could not explain. The affection he could not name without risking rejection.

The world called it growing up.

But it felt more like disappearing.

Years passed.

The child became older, but the hiding never truly ended. It merely evolved.

He learned how to laugh at jokes that wounded him. Learned how to remain silent when conversations turned cruel. Learned how to survive rooms that demanded versions of him that never existed.

Survival is a strange thing.

People celebrate it without asking what was sacrificed to achieve it.

No one notices the dreams abandoned along the way.

No one counts the pieces of identity buried beneath years of pretending.

No one asks how exhausting it is to carry a mask so long that it begins to feel like skin.

Yet beneath every forced smile lived the same question:

"Would I still be loved if people truly knew me?"

The question followed him everywhere.

It sat beside him during meals.

It waited outside locked bedroom doors.

It stared back from mirrors.

Because when you spend years hearing that your existence is a disappointment, you eventually begin mistaking prejudice for truth.

You begin believing that perhaps they are right.

That perhaps you are wasting your potential.

That perhaps your identity overshadows your achievements.

That perhaps you would be easier to love if you were someone else.

But truth is patient.

It waits.

Like sunlight lingering behind storm clouds.

Like flowers pushing through concrete.

Like a rainbow refusing to disappear simply because the sky became dark.

Truth waits until you are ready to hear it.

And when it finally speaks, it says something simple.

Something the world should have told him years ago.

Hindi ka sayang.

Not because you are intelligent.
Not because you are talented.
Not because you are handsome.
Not because you fit someone else's definition of success.

You are not valuable despite being who you are.
You are valuable as who you are.

Hindi ka sayang.

Not the love you carry.
Not the softness in your heart.
Not the way your eyes light up when you are finally allowed to be yourself.
Not your dreams.
Not your voice.
Not your existence.

You were never a mistake waiting to be corrected.
You were never a problem waiting to be solved.
You were never too much.

And you were never not enough.

The world may try to measure your worth through acceptance, approval, or tradition. It may tell you that your value depends on how closely you resemble everyone else.

But stars do not apologize for shining differently.
Neither should you.

Because the greatest tragedy is not being different.

The greatest tragedy is spending a lifetime believing your difference makes you less deserving of love.

It does not.

And it never will.

So if you find yourself standing at the edge of another lonely night, carrying old fears like stones inside your chest, remember this:

You survived every version of yourself that was taught to disappear.
You survived every silence.

Every rejection.
Every doubt.

And still, here you are.

Breathing.
Dreaming.
Becoming.

Because you are not something that needs fixing.

You are someone worth finding.

And no matter how many times the world tries to convince you otherwise,

"Sayang ka."

No.

They were wrong.

Hindi ka sayang.
You never were.
