Salo-Salo: A Fund Raising Exhibit for the Art Relief Mobile Kitchen

Since its founding in 2013, the Art Relief Mobile Kitchen (ARMK) has served a conservative estimate of 685,809 meals at ground zero of major disasters in the Philippines. In the past 10 years, we have created our own niche in the Emergency Food Aid Space: ARMK is an Artist/Volunteer-Led Emergency Food Aid Provider.

We need your help to allow us to tell our story beyond the confines of our country. This October, Alex and I will be speaking at the University of Wisconsin in Madison where we will deliver a public lecture, interact with graduate students, and of course, cook. It is our chance to share the ARMK story in North America: of how a motley group of artists gathered to feed the survivors of Typhoon Yolanda arriving at the Villamor Airbase 10 years ago and how “a group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world”*.

In the coming days, we will be showing photographs by Artist-Volunteers to help raise funds for the trip. Each photograph will be printed on archival paper and signed by the artist. Each print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) designating it as an original work of art. Aside from works by Alex and our son, Dylan Baluyut, photographs by Little Wing Luna, Nana Buxani, Luis Liwanag and Veejay Villafranca will be featured as well. Proceeds from the sale will go towards helping fund the trip.

We will also be hosting a “Salo-salo” on Saturday, September 16 at Shutterspace Studios in Quezon City. We invite everyone to come and partake in this gathering of artists and friends. A Collection of Portraits of Apo Whang-Od, from Vogue Philippines’ April 2023 Cover Story, “Next of Skin”

Last April 2023, the world celebrated beauty through Apo Whang-Od as the cover girl for Vogue Philippines. Her story and everything she culturally represents resonated with thousands of people, where the printed magazine sold out in stores instantaneously, and inquiries for prints were made.

For three weeks, five portraits of Apo Whang-Od will be for sale at a special price; these photos will be printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta, will be sold in two sizes, and will cater to both Philippine and international buyers. Each photo will have a Certificate of Authenticity and a signature by the photographer, and 50% percent of the earnings will be used to continue community development under the close advisement of the locals of Buscalan, while the other 50% will be used to cover logistics of said projects.
