Yesterday, .grace and I reminisced about last year’s trip to the Philippines. We were focused on how we traveled >14hrs by car from the remote province of Sagada back to our Manila Airbnb, then hopped on a plane to Legazpi no more than 4hrs after getting out of the car. As soon as we landed in Legazpi, though, we were off on more adventures as if we didn’t spend a near-20 hours straight traveling across the country. It was extremely physically taxing, but it is easily one of my fondest memories of our trip. Some of the most unexpected experiences while traveling often become some of my most favorite - they’re sh*tty, but in a good way as oxymoronic as that sounds. Legazpi has some of my most favorite views from that entire trip. Watching the sunrise creep over the crest of the horizon while the cool morning breeze brushed against my skin was nothing short of blissful.

When I saw this week's prompt from and , I immediately thought of this photo. Captured in 2017, it features my dad (left), his brother Uncle Ed, my mom (top left), and my dad's mother. I picked this specific photo for the prompt not because of smiles shared, but because of the story of Uncle Ed.

For most of his life, Uncle Ed was a Tai Chi grand master. He was healthy and fit until he fell victim to a stroke while he was alone. Found hours later, the stroke left him with no control over the left side of his body and a rapidly deteriorating memory requiring 24/7 care from a nursing home.

While in the Philippines, we took a day to visit the nursing home Uncle Ed lived in. When we arrived at the home, Uncle Ed's face lit up with joy upon recognizing his brother (my dad) whom he hasn't seen in many years and me whom he hasn't seen since I was a baby. We spent a few hours talking and feeding him, sharing laughs all the while his memory would fade in and out of recognizing his mother's and brother's faces. Before we left and while he still recognized us, my parents and grandmother took a photo with him. The smiles on their faces is the truest definition of Joy. To be surrounded by family, people who love and care for you, is what I believe Joy is all about.

Now, more than ever, it is important for us to cherish the ones we still have, while we have the time. Be thankful for one another and, of course, share some Joy. @ God's Grace Home Care Center
