When Graphic Design Is Mistaken for Desktop Publishing

As a freelance graphic designer, I recently had a client question why my service cost was higher than expected. After some discussion, I realized the comparison wasn’t with other designers, it was with desktop publishing.

This is a common misconception.

• Graphic design is about strategy, creativity, and brand identity. It involves concept development, visual storytelling, and ensuring designs communicate effectively across platforms.

• Desktop publishing focuses more on formatting and layout, often using templates or straightforward arrangements.

Both are valuable, but they are not the same. Graphic design is not just decoration, it’s problem-solving, communication, and identity-building. That’s why investing in professional design goes beyond the immediate output; it’s about long-term impact.

For clients, understanding this distinction sets clearer expectations. For designers, it’s a reminder to articulate the value of our craft.

Graphic design is strategy. Graphic design is identity. And that’s worth more than just a layout.
