The Philippine vine snake (𝘈𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴) is an arboreal species endemic to the Philippines. It is known for its slender body and vibrant green coloration, although some individuals may appear yellowish or even bluish, helping them blend perfectly with vines and shrubs. When threatened, they may spread their tongue and expand their body to appear larger and intimidate potential predators. This species is mildly venomous.

A snake that eats snails and slugs? Yep, this is 𝘈𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘢 (blunt-headed slug snake), one of my favorite snakes to observe. This species is arboreal and nocturnal, and it mainly feeds on slugs and snails. What makes it even more fascinating is how it eats, it uses a unique “sawing” motion with its mandibles to carefully remove snails from their shells. When threatened, it relies on camouflage. Instead of striking or fleeing, it stays completely motionless, mimicking a branch or twig.

Snakes are often misunderstood. When people see one for the first time, they usually think all snakes are venomous and dangerous. In reality, snakes generally have no intention of hurting ys, they are simply driven by fear. When threatened, they may display defensive behavior as a warning, but in most cases, they prefer to flee rather than attack.

In the Philippines, there are over a 100+ species of snakes, yet only a few are highly venomous. killing these creature is not the answer, instead we need to understand their behavior and recognize their ecological importance.

𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘'𝗦 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗟 𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗢𝗙 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗚𝗨𝗜𝗦𝗘

𝘗𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘺𝘯𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘱𝘶𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘴 is one of the most widespread snakes in Asia. During our fieldwork, we found this juvenile common mock viper camouflaged among dead leaves at a 70-degree angle in the karst mountains somewhere in eastern Mindanao. Although this snake has "viper" in its name, it is not a true viper; it belongs to the family Lamprophiidae. It was named for its striking resemblance to true vipers, mimicking their appearance. Despite being only mildly venomous, its bite can cause swelling and sometimes blisters.

I don’t know much about geckos, but guess what? We found a 𝘗𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘥𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘬𝘬𝘰 𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘬𝘢𝘺𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵, also known as the Southern Philippine Smooth-scaled Gecko! I’m so grateful to have encountered this rare arboreal h**p during our fieldwork, it’s such a great start to learning about geckos in the Philippines, especially in Mindanao, where my fieldwork is focused. This gecko is endemic to the Philippines and was formerly part of the P. 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘶𝘴 complex. However, in 2014, Siler et al. revised the taxonomy, restricting the range of true P. 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘶𝘴 to the Luzon PAIC (Pleistocene Aggregate Island Complex) and recognizing three additional species within the complex.

With its long, slender body and majestic coloration, this gecko is truly stunning, the eyes, in particular, are amazing to observe. The current population trend of 𝘗𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘥𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘬𝘬𝘰 𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘬𝘢𝘺𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵 is unknown, but it is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List because it is likely more widespread than current records show and can tolerate some habitat disturbance, as long as secondary forest remains intact. This species can be found on the islands of Leyte, Bohol, and the northern and eastern parts of Mindanao, but further research is needed to better understand its exact distribution and population status.
