Thousands across the U.S. are closing the book on farms that have been in their families for generations, either by selling to a larger entity or declaring bankruptcy.

It has transformed food production and local communities. Critics of farm consolidation say it’s also led to less crop diversity, presenting risks for the broader food system.

The disappearance of small farms has carried steep consequences for rural America, upending the transfer of wealth—long attached to the land—between generations. And the tough economics are making the search for successors more challenging.

Children of farmers today have more opportunities to work beyond agriculture than they did decades ago, and families are typically smaller, shrinking the pool of possible candidates.

“When farmers owned the land and lived on the land, they took care of the land and they formed communities that worked together and solved problems and took care of everybody,” says fifth-generation farmer Don Guinnip, 74. “You’re not going to have that in the future.”

The natural choice to take over Gunnip's farm, his son and daughter, left for college and now work in corporate fields. His siblings made the same decision years earlier.

“It’s disappointing to me,” Guinnip says, holding back tears.

10 years ago, I delivered my first-ever keynote speech at an international stage where key decision-makers and leaders of agricultural systems were present. This was the 3rd Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development (GCARD3) in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This was the first step to my global engagements in agricultural policy advocacy. The rest was history. I look back and see only the faithfulness of God.

In my speech I outlined how agricultural systems must adjust to have enabling environments for youth to be involved. I highlighted what I then called the Five-Fold Approach: 1) Policy, 2) Research, 3) Academe, 4) Extension and 5) Agribusiness/Entrepreneurship.

As I think about the past decade, I can totally agree with Steve Jobs that somehow you get to connect the dots looking back. I definitely went thru all the five sub-sectors I outlined in my speech.

My first job was as a research assistant. Next I taught in UPLB. All the while doing policy advocacy work locally and internationally. Then I worked in the private sector with a fertilizer company that was heavily extension work and community organizing. Now, I'm here in the agribusiness side of things with the startup I co-founded.

I remember kneeling down in the hotel room in South Africa and just thanking God for the opportunity to be there to speak on behalf of young people in agriculture. It was too surreal.

Is this as good as it gets? No. I am praying and claiming that it gets better by the grace and favor of God.

How time flies. God is good. 🙏🏼
