Placer is a coastal municipality located in the province of Surigao del Norte, part of the Caraga region in Mindanao, Philippines. It is bounded by the towns of Bacuag, Mainit, and the Philippine Sea. The municipality comprises several barangays, with its town proper located near the coast. It is known for its hilly terrain and natural resources.
History: Placer was originally part of the nearby municipality of Gigaquit. It became an independent town in 1850, during the Spanish colonial period. The name "Placer" comes from the Spanish word referring to a "placer" or a place where gold is found, indicating the areaโs historical connection to gold mining.
During World War II, the town, like much of Mindanao, was occupied by Japanese forces and saw resistance from local guerrilla fighters.
