Nestled along the scenic coastline of Antique province are hidden gems that have sustained generations of fisherfolks, traders, and entire towns: the serene and magical estuaries, or "gibwangan".

These estuaries are the heart and soul of Antique, where freshwater currents from nine major rivers and countless streams curl and bloom in the salty embrace of the Sulu Sea.

Organized with Museo Iloilo and SM City Iloilo, GIBWANGAN teems with inspired pieces from Antiqueño artists pays homage to the province's life-giving estuaries.

Gibwangan overflows with colors, textures and forms— offering a variety of takes on the region's history, struggles and dreams. With Gibwangan, the once-neglected estuaries become a symbol of hope.

Gibwangan and other related art shows aim to support the Visayas Islands Visual Arts Exhibition and Conference (VIVA ExCon)— a biennial gathering of artists, scholars, art patrons, and community leaders from the Visayas and beyond.

This year's VIVA ExCon— the 17th edition and with the theme, "Suba sa Iraya",— will "dock" in the estuaries of San Jose de Buenavista and Sibalom on November 8-10.

It will feature epic chants and dances by members of Panay Bukidnon indigenous communities, public performances, outdoor installations, curated art exhibition, a conference and school projects.

Participants will include about 45 international and local artists and collectives, academics, and more than 60 architecture students from three Panay Island universities.

VIVA ExCon is also supported by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts, Antique LGUs, the University of Antique, Goethe Institut-Philippines, Japan Foundation-Manila, and Outlook Pointe Foundation.
