WHO Chief Acknowledges Persistent Public Fear Six Years Since Pandemic Began

TENERIFE, SPAIN — In a message delivered to the people of Tenerife last Saturday, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus acknowledged that feelings of fear remain a natural experience shared by everyone, six years after the global pandemic first emerged.

The top UN health official noted that lingering anxiety is a common sentiment felt across communities worldwide, years after the crisis first unfolded and altered daily life globally.

TROPICAL DEPRESSION CALOY CONTINUES TO MOVE WEST NORTHWESTWARD WHILE OVER THE PHILIPPINE SEA.

Location of Center (4:00 AM):
The center of Tropical Depression CALOY was estimated based on all available data at 530 km East of Guiuan, Eastern Samar (10.8°N, 130.6°E).

Intensity:
Maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 55 km/h, and central pressure of 1004 hPa

Present Movement:
West northwestward at 15 km/h

Extent of Tropical Cyclone Winds:
Strong winds extend outwards up to 250 km from the center

As of 2:00 AM today, 11 May 2026, Tropical Depression "CALOY" {Int'l name "HAGUPIT"} is being monitored inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Meanwhile, a Low Pressure Area (LPA 05c) is being monitored outside the PAR and is "UNLIKELY" to develop into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.

All are advised to monitor updates from DOST-PAGASA.

S**A NG BALYENA? 200-KILONG AMBERGRIS NATAGPUAN SA SULTAN KUDARAT

LEBAK, SULTAN KUDARAT — Isang materyal na pinaniniwalaang ambergris o kilala sa tawag na “suka ng balyena” ang natagpuan ng isang mangingisda sa baybayin ng Barangay Tibpuan sa bayang ito nitong Biyernes, Mayo 8.

Tinatayang umabot sa 200 kilo ang bigat ng natagpuang bagay. Sa ngayon, naipasa na ito sa Kagawaran ng Kapaligiran at Likas na Yaman (DENR) upang isailalim sa pagsusuri at kumpirmasyon sa laboratoryo, at mapatunayan kung tunay nga itong ambergris.

Ang ambergris ay kilala bilang isang bihirang sangkap na ginagamit sa paggawa ng mga mamahaling pabango, dahil nakatutulong ito upang mas tumagal at manatili ang amoy ng mga produktong ito.

Gayunpaman, mahigpit na ipinagbabawal sa Pilipinas ang pagkuha, pagbebenta, pagbili, o pagmamay-ari ng nasabing materyal, alinsunod sa mga batas na nagpoprotekta sa mga balyena at iba pang yamang-dagat ng bansa.

• Location of Center (10:00 AM):
The center of Tropical Depression CALOY was estimated based on all available data at 770 km East of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte (10.1°N, 132.5°E).

• Intensity:
Maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 70 km/h, and central pressure of 1004 hPa

• Present Movement:
Northwestward at 10 km/h

• Extent of Tropical Cyclone Winds:
Strong to gale-force winds extend outwards up to 320 km from the center

Kalinga Gears Up for Historic Visit of Papal Nuncio; Preparations in Full Swing

TABUK CITY, KALINGA — The provincial government of Kalinga has formally organized a working committee to oversee all preparations for the upcoming visit of Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, Archbishop Charles John Brown, set on June 1–2, 2026.

The high-profile visit centers on the ordination of Reverend Father Sean Mejia, Bishop-elect of the Apostolic Vicariate of Tabuk. The sacred ceremony will take place at St. William’s Cathedral in Bulanao, Tabuk City, a milestone event for the local Catholic community and the entire province.

Thousands of guests—comprising church leaders, officials, devotees, and visitors from different parts of the country and abroad—are expected to gather for the occasion. In anticipation of the large crowd, authorities are stepping up safety and security measures to ensure a smooth, orderly, and secure celebration for all attendees and guests of honor.

Part of the official program lined up for the Papal Nuncio includes a civic reception and a state dinner, as the province prepares to accord him the highest level of courtesy and recognition.
