Eduardo MasferrΓ© (1909-1995) is almost unknown in Catalonia, despite the importance of his photographic work. He is the son of a Catalan soldier stationed in the Philippines at the end of the 19th century, before the loss of Spanish sovereignty over the Filipino archipelago to the United States, and a native of the Cordillera Central mountain range on the island of Luzon, the largest and most populated island in the Philippines. In the 1930s, Eduardo MasferrΓ© taught himself the art of photography.
His interest is focused on showing the indigenous peoples of the Cordillera Central (Kalinga, Bontoc, Ifugao, Kankanaey, etc.) and their customs and traditional way of life. The economy of the entire region is largely based on rice cultivation. To grow rice in a landscape like the Cordillera Central, which is very irregular, over the centuries, people have built an infinite number of terraces on the sides of the mountain, eventually forming a cultural landscape with great richness and beauty, characteristics that make it a Heritage of Humanity Site.
Eduardo MasferrΓ© knows and loves his land, the Cordillera Central. And he is also aware of the dangers that threaten it. He knew that indigenous populations were threatened by the unstoppable nature of modern life, so he devoted a significant part of his life to portraying them.
