HAPPY VA-LENT-INES DAY!

Get it?

Because Valentine's Day today also falls on Ash Wednesday, the start of the LENT Season.

Serendipitous? Fortuitous? Inauspicious?

Could there be a connection? Should there be a connection?

Well, Ash Wednesday reminds us mainly of our mortality – that we shall all die.

“…for dust you are and to dust you will return." Genesis 3: 19

How about that for a Valentine’s Day greeting? “Mamamatay ka rin!”

But seriously, Ash Wednesday or the entire Lenten Season should make us reflect more of how we should live.

And that’s where LOVE should come in – because it’s the reason why we live and shall have eternal life.

“For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3: 16

Ash Wednesday / Lenten Season also tells us the value and necessity of SACRIFICE, which TRUE LOVE requires.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.” John 15: 13

So if there's a common denominator of Valentine's Day and Ash Wednesday - it's TRUE LOVE - the Love that offers oneself for others - as JESUS did.
