Khadeji Falls – Karachi’s Forgotten Paradise

Many young people in Karachi have never even heard of Khadeji Falls, once one of the city’s most beautiful picnic spots.
I was lucky to visit it on a school picnic around 1970. At that time, it was about 30–35 km from Karachi. Our buses could only go so far, and then we had to climb over rocky hills to reach this hidden paradise.
The clear water, small waterfall, fresh air and peaceful surroundings made the journey unforgettable. I also remember local villagers growing fresh vegetables there, using the natural spring water.
I visited Khadeji Falls again during my college days. I still remember one very sad Sunday when, as far as I can recall, around 10 people lost their lives in the deep pools. The water looked calm, but it was much deeper than it seemed, the rocks were very slippery, and there were no lifeguards or rescue services. It was a heartbreaking tragedy.
Over the years, more accidents happened, access to the area became restricted, and no proper tourist facilities were developed. Slowly, Khadeji Falls disappeared from Karachi’s picnic map. The waterfall still exists, but it is no longer the famous family picnic spot that many of us enjoyed in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
This old photograph brings back wonderful memories of a time when Karachi had its own hidden oasis.

Just after midnight on a Sunday, I set out to capture Karachi vibrant food streets from behind the windscreen, documenting the lights, the traffic, and the irresistible aroma that lingers long after most cities have gone to bed.
Our journey ended with a stop for the legendary Gola Ganda. Decades have passed, yet it still lives up to its reputation—bringing back memories with every colourful, icy bite.
From roadside bun kebabs and chai to gourmet restaurants and late-night desserts, Karachi has a flavour for every craving and a story waiting around every corner.
For any hungry Habibi, Karachi truly has something to offer—24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A dusty horizon kept me indoors today, but photography has taught me that every day offers a story if we are willing to see it. With my 35mm prime lens, I turned away from distant landscapes and found beauty in quiet corners of home—a fading sunset, everyday fruits, a silent visitor on the balcony, and light gently falling across familiar spaces. Sometimes the best photographs aren’t found by travelling farther, but by looking deeper.
