The power of social media is yet again making waves, JusticeForAmir is trending all over. The reaction from the general masses has changed substantially because of a video going viral where a boy named Amir appears to be abused and his dignity maligned by a few police officials.
What needs to be answered is a very critical question. Are the people upset about the "leakage" of the video or the "content" of the video ?
Because not long ago, they were all cheering the same KP Police for their swift action against this very guy (who is apparently an Afghani citizen of Tehkal), calling himself above the law and openly challenging the writ of the state by abusing the senior Police Officers and SHO without being provoked. The act of him putting that video online not only landed him in trouble but placed the KP Police in an awkward position to deal with it and ensure that nobody should declare and provoke others for such rebellious behavior. Many celebrated his apology and called it "another software update".
We as a society are a bunch of hypocrites. We enjoyed the so-called software update but are criticizing the "procedure" followed to achieve that target. How do you think these software updates work ?
Any person who is in an open denial of the supremacy of rule-of-law suddenly coming to terms with it overnight, needs a lot of working. Now if we don't like violence then why we all encouraged such software updates ? And what is the alternative to such anti-state behavior ? Surely not what we saw ...
In short we need to be pragmatic, being a crude realist and cheering "software updates" while being an idealist and blaming the whole system of Police the next second, is surely bipolar behavior. The inhumane action of four individuals should not give us the right to support abusive and repulsive behavior against the most important arm of the state i.e Police. These officials should be punished but most importantly they need some proper training on how to execute orders and curb such behaviors, so it must not happen again in the future.
It's time we stop jumping from one extreme to the other and take a middle ground by making our own perspective rather than allowing the social media to dictate our mindset.
