​Building resilience doesn't require five figures in the bank. It comes down to practical planning, smart redundancy, and refusing to rely on systems that collapse every storm cycle.
​Five cost-effective upgrades to survive blackouts and storm season:

​Independent Satellite Comms: Cell towers choke or drop entirely within hours of a blackout. A Starlink terminal wired into a compact lithium or AGM battery pack bypasses failing local telecoms and keeps critical lines open

​Smart Cistern Integration: Don't park an unverified multi-ton tank on a concrete slab without checking structural weight limits. Always match your water reservoir with a dedicated pressure tank alongside a ½–¾ HP pump—this stops short-cycling, conserves precious wattage, and extends pump lifespan.

You love the green don't deny it?!

It’s still a big work in progress, and there’s a hell of a lot left to do, but there’s something incredibly gratifying about coming home and walking straight into a green space.

The first thing you see before entering the house is greenery. Something that immediately makes you feel at ease. Calm. Relaxed.

It’s a space you can sit in day or night, surrounded by nature—but in a controlled, private environment. Outside the walls, cars are going past, people are coming and going, life is happening. But inside, all of that disappears. You’re isolated from the noise and you’ve got your own little sanctuary.

Or, as my wife likes to call it, a sacred space.

The atrium is evolving here at our home as a bit of a proof of concept. Maybe someone else will see it and think, I want something like that on my property.

For now, I’m just happy to share the progress as it comes together, bit by bit.

Poco a Poco - it’ll have a roof. Soon there’ll be water features. Then more greenery, more details, more character.

And eventually, it’s going to be an absolute work of art.

Here’s the thing with me: I’m a true pragmatist.

I really truly care or get bogged down in politics, personalities, or corporate drama....

That’s why I don’t care about Elon Musk. I cant stand the guy, but I like his products and what he creates—and I like Starlink.

In Puerto Rico, it’s an essential piece of kit, and frankly, it doesn't matter who runs the company.

What matters at the end of the day is simple: do you have reliable internet, yes or no?

The reality of modern life is that the internet is a critical utility. I need it to run my day-to-day operations and keep my family fed. I don’t love how tethered to smartphones and screens we’ve all become, but that’s the world we live in.

And looking at the practical realities here on the island, our infrastructure is permanently at risk.

The electrical grid is unstable, and when the power dies, telecommunications drop with it.

People love to say, "Oh, I’ve got T-Mobile 5G, I’m covered." Sure, you’re covered as long as the cell towers survive the physical storm and their backup generators still have diesel. After a few days or a week in a serious disaster, land-based systems and radio links will inevitably fail.

That’s why satellite internet is a complete no-brainer, even if you only treat it as a secondary failsafe.

I’ve been in Puerto Rico for close to five years now. For the first four, I was on Liberty. Don't get me wrong, the speeds were decent—actually faster than Australia by a country mile when I left, which genuinely shocked me. But the reliability was another story.

Even living right near a main data hub, whenever the grid dropped, the local neighborhood node’s batteries would run out of steam, leaving us without internet for days. Then there were the random drops out of nowhere.

When it worked, it was fine. When it didn’t, it was an absolute pain in the ass.

When we moved into our new place, there weren’t any Liberty lines connected, and I had zero interest in dealing with the drama of getting them hooked up.

I said, stuff it. For an extra few bucks a month, let’s give Starlink a crack.

Since switching, it has been seamless. Weather hasn't been an issue, peak hours don't choke it, and it just runs. Best of all, when the grid cuts out, I keep the dish powered off my battery banks without missing a beat.

If someone wants to bypass a solid utility to protest a public figure, that’s their prerogative.

I operate differently. My priority is keeping my household functional and staying connected with family across the globe. Starlink flat-out delivers on that front.

​We’ve got about 100 feet of unfinished block wall to bring across the finish line. The game plan:

​Tie in the rebar

​Form the columns and tie beam

​Bring in the pump truck for the pour

​Finish it all off with the empañetado

​Nothing too major, just solid work with an ocean view over the top course.

What truth I'll tell you I'm nobody special I'm nobody special!

​I didn't arrive in Puerto Rico as some wealthy, cashed-up investor. Far from it.

I'm just a humble Greek islander / Balkan Serb hybrid that was born at the ass end of the in Australia

​On paper, I’m a du***ss. No fancy degrees, no elite qualifications, no corporate career track.



Yet I’m sitting here on a tropical island without a mortgage, while most of the people I grew up with—and every teacher who told me I’d never amount to anything—are still grinding away under thirty-year bank loans.

​I came here with almost nothing. I took whatever savings I had from my last place, which wasn't enough to buy anything livable, and bought a run-down s**t heap. No working plumbing, no septic, no power—just a concrete shell.

​Over the last three years, I rebuilt it with my own two hands into a solid home for my family.

​I’ve got the receipts.

I put in roughly $120,000 in sweat equity without hiring out the labor, plus at least $60,000 in raw materials. For that total spend, nobody could touch a house this clean with brand-new electrical, new plumbing, new everything built right

I got scars cuts injuries all sorts of things ..

​We didn't do it in a vacuum. We had to rely on family for a roof over our heads for nearly three years while I ground this out, along with family on the mainland backing our mission. Without that support, none of this would have crossed the finish line.

​Like I said I'm an immigrant I’m an immigrant from the other side of the world. Coming into an unfamiliar system without natively speaking Spanish means starting on the back foot.

Every single errand, permit, material run, and job takes double the effort when you have zero built-in network.

Not being a Puerto Rican or from this part of the world you're in a disadvantage I don't care what anyone says and I don't care that I'm a disadvantage that just inspires me to work harder to get ahead I'm cool with that I love it I love the challenge

​So when people say getting ahead without massive wealth is impossible, I laugh. If a du***ss immigrant with no credentials can pull this off, the blueprint isn't magic—it’s just relentless work and a degree of craziness to go with us you know?

​I’m not a genius, I’m not better looking than anyone else, and I don't have special powers. I just have an uncompromising work ethic. I do what needs to be done because the only alternative is failure, and I refuse to accept that outcome.

I don't know how to roll over and die even if I wanted to, I wouldn't know where to start....

I haven't made many videos this last week because I felt pretty enough to get on camera but we had some excitement to find that the little tamarindo trees we've been growing from seeds have already started producing their first flowers and importantly the water filters arrived

Finally concrete work complete on this project in Mata De Platano for actually some of my first paying building clients back in 2024

Phase 1 of the project is complete - new carport slab, new walkway ramp, enclosing existing space in making a new room plus concrete floors 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

On top of that we did a French drain

Phase 2 in the future will involve a proper driveway when the client is ready.

Started with a complete mess with the existing carport slab resembling crumbling concrete dunes and plenty of rain water getting in.

Was a lot of fun a lot of hard work and I got a few nice scars and one good concrete burn from the project but while there's projects are really walked away feeling very satisfied.
