Built on the foundations of an early 15th-century chapel, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte was later enlarged to accommodate the growing number of worshippers, but was destroyed in 1748 by an earthquake.
Completed in 1818, this beautiful church is Madeira’s most important place of pilgrimage, hosting lively processions, particularly on 15 August - the feast day of Nossa Senhora do Monte, the patron saint of the city of Funchal.
Outside the church, you’ll find the famous “basket carts”, which are one of the city’s best-known attractions. They are handcrafted from wicker and have two or three seats. It’s an experience not to be missed ⛪🛷🌳🌴🌼
