Portugal for Connoisseurs: From Sun-Drenched Coast to Mushroom Paradise 🍄‍🟫

In the forests surrounding a monastery near Braga, I joined a small group from the local mycological association. This was not a tourist activity, but a proper field excursion with specialists who know exactly what grows where and why. The landscape, the moist forest floor, the filtered light between the trees and the variety of mushrooms made it an impressive experience. We observed, identified, documented and eventually harvested. The collection was handled with respect: not as trophies, but as elements of a living ecosystem.

An autumn walk with a knowledgeable guide in this region reveals a completely different side of Portugal. For anyone who knows the country mainly from beaches and sunshine, this is an unexpected dimension: green, quiet, humid and biologically rich. The mushroom season here also lasts longer than in Northern Europe, providing weeks of opportunities to see species that rarely appear elsewhere.

A strong recommendation for anyone interested in discovering a more authentic and lesser-known Portugal during the autumn months.

The demonstration in Porto last night was a powerful expression of solidarity and outrage following the Tempi train disaster in Greece. Protesters gathered in the city’s streets, holding banners and signs that denounced what they see as a state crime, demanding accountability and justice.

The sign in the foreground reads “Não à ocultação do crime de estado em Tempi, Grécia” (No to the cover-up of the state crime in Tempi, Greece), emphasizing the growing frustration with institutional negligence and failures that led to the tragic collision on February 28, 2023. The visible presence of Portuguese and Greek messages highlights the transnational grief and anger, connecting the Porto protest to the broader wave of demonstrations that have erupted across Greece and beyond.

Casa da Música | Porto
Designed by Rem Koolhaas, this architectural icon is a masterclass in geometric boldness. Capturing its essence through (en)Visionography™ means seeing beyond the structure—exploring light, form, and emotion in black & white.
