Shooting into the light without a lens hood is tough... Sunset at Pico do Arieiro was perfect. Above the clouds, the world just slowed down — golden light on the peaks, and the sky was on fire. One of those rare moments where everything was soothing — timing, weather, and wonder.

Driving through Madeira feels like stepping into a painting—layers of vivid greens, bursts of wildflowers, and the sweet scent of eucalyptus and laurel trees drifting through the air. Every bend in the road reveals a new shade, a new view, and a reminder of nature’s raw beauty.

Third time lucky—barely. I returned to Fanal Forest three times; the first two were under harsh blue skies. On my final visit, I had just 90 minutes, and most shots were spoiled by water droplets. These ancient laurel trees, remnants of a 20-million-year-old subtropical forest, turn mist into rain and the clouds into chaos. Magical, but maddening to photograph.

Veu da Noiva is one of Madeira’s most iconic waterfalls, cascading dramatically into the Atlantic. Once part of the legendary ER101 coastal road, the route was closed after landslides, but you can still view this breathtaking sight from the nearby miradouro. A reminder of the island’s wild beauty and how nature reclaims its space.

Sunrise is the best time to catch this beautiful spectacle as the morning glow catches the water from the side.

Porto’s vibrant riverside is a striking blend of colour and commerce—brightly painted houses of the Ribeira face the historic port wine warehouses of Vila Nova de Gaia, echoing centuries of trade across the Douro.

Awe-inspiring Pico do Arieiro at night.

With no moon and perfect conditions, it was the ideal opportunity to capture the Milky Way above the clouds. As the last of the sunset glow faded and the crowds cleared out, I stayed behind in the silence of the mountains, watching the stars slowly fill the sky. It was one of those rare moments where everything aligns—location, timing, and sky clarity.

But nature had other plans too. The wind at the summit was relentless, making it incredibly tough to get a steady shot with my travel tripod. Still, I managed a few frames before the conditions pushed me to call it a night. Nice to meet fellow photographer
for a few minutes.

One thing I still can't understand—why anyone would litter such a place. I decided not to remove the can from the photo, even though I did take it home... in my camera bag.

A few lessons learned: bring a wider lens, and definitely a sturdier tripod when you’re standing on top of a mountain at midnight. But even with the challenges, it was an unforgettable couple of hours beneath the stars. If I had more time and didn't have a longer drive home I would have stayed and tried to get a better composition.

The Chapel of Senhor da Pedra, built in the 17th century, stands on a rocky outcrop at Miramar Beach near Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. It’s a popular spot for both worship and photography, especially at sunset when the Atlantic tide surrounds the small baroque chapel.

Livraria Lello, Porto — opened in 1906 and often ranked among the most beautiful bookstores in the world.
Famous for its neo-Gothic façade, stained glass ceiling, and iconic red staircase. Entry requires a ticket, which is redeemable against a book purchase.

This was a challenging shot to capture—Livraria Lello is incredibly busy, and visits are limited to just 15 minutes.
I took multiple shots from the same position and later removed people during editing. It’s not perfectly centered, but I managed to capture the staircase in all its dramatic detail.

Guindaste Viewpoint, Faial — dramatic cliffs, wild Atlantic, and a deep sense of isolation. The light wasn’t quite what I’d hoped for, but just before sunrise, a few fleeting moments of colour made the early start worth it. 🌅🌊 Another marvellous viewpoint.
