22/6/2026. I had a feeling I would see orca this morning so got up early, watching the sea from 3.30am. At 5.04am, I spotted orca approaching Kinnaird Head from the west. On seeing bull #34, I immediately recognised them (members of the 27s pod). Bull #34 was my first ever orca, seen in Mousa Sound, Shetland, in November 2020.

Two of the orca passed Kinnaird Head just five metres from shore. The other two were around 100m out.

After seeing them off Kinnaird Head, I again saw them off Cairnbulg, Inverallochy, St. Combs and finally Rattray Head, from where they appeared to be heading out to sea. What a morning!

All photos taken from shore.

Thanks to the concerned couple who told me today that there was a dolphin stranded on Fraserburgh beach. I quickly messaged BDMLR then got to the beach to find …

… an inflatable dolphin sitting on the beach with BDMLR undertaking training.

Think the concerned couple should have went to specsavers 👓.

21/6/2026. Minke whales again today, this time from Pitullie. I also saw a couple of very distant Risso's dolphins and a harbour porpoise from Kinnaird Head.

Thanks to Susan for a heads-up regarding the minkes and to Leslie for spotting the Risso's.

20/6/2026. Ninety minutes this evening watching this beautiful minke whale travelling back and fore along the bay west of Rosehearty. The whale passed by several times just fifty metres from shore as I walked along the coastal footpath.

Reports of minke whales seen today off Portsoy, Whitehills, Banff, Macduff, Rosehearty and Fraserburgh.

All photos taken from shore.

20/6/2026. At least two minke whales off Macduff at 5.30 this morning.

19/6/2026. After several days seeing minke whales between Rosehearty and Fraserburgh, this afternoon I decided to visit Macduff. Within a couple of minutes of arriving, I spotted two minke whales 😄. The north Aberdeenshire coast is currently great for minke sightings.

Photos taken from shore (in pouring rain).

18/6/2026. A fantastic minke whale sighting this morning as one swam past just fifty metres from shore off Rosehearty.

I managed to miss a single bull orca that was seen this afternoon from Rosehearty, heading west. After missing it at Rosehearty, I tried to get ahead of it by going to Troup Head but it turned round heading back east then out to sea. Some you win, some you lose.

Just created a short timelapse (18 photos) of a mother and calf fin whale surfacing together off Cabo Girão, Madeira in April 2026. Best viewed with quality set to 1080p.
