After two years, it’s official - PR1 Areeiro - Pico Ruivo is reopening in April 2026, during the Madeira Island Ultra Trail (MIUT)! 🌄

Access may still be limited at first, but long-term recovery will ensure a sustainable future for the trail.

Closed since the 2024 wildfires, the trail has undergone a major recovery plan led by the IFCN and the Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Environment and Culture.

More than 17 km of mountain paths are being restored - with new safety railings, step repairs, and vegetation recovery to protect Madeira’s fragile peaks.

This reopening marks a new era for Madeira’s mountains: safer, sustainable, and more breathtaking than ever. 🌿

Driving on roundabouts.

Drivers approaching roundabouts should always give way to those already travelling on them.
If you want to take the first exit, stay in the right-hand lane.
If you want to exit at any of the other exits, you must take the left lane and only occupy the rightmost traffic lane after passing the exit lane immediately before the one you want to exit.

Driving irregularly in the right-hand lane, as well as increasing the likelihood of an accident, can result in an offence that carries a fine of between 60 and 300 euros.
