According to E-REDES, the interruption was caused by a problem in the European electricity grid, which affected the national grid. As instructed by REN, it was necessary to carry out power cuts in some specific areas to guarantee the stability of the network. The service is being restored progressively.

The blackout also affected regions of Spain and France, due to faults in very high voltage lines of 400,000 volts. In Spain, autonomous communities such as Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia, Aragon, Navarre, Basque Country, Castile and León, Extremadura and Murcia were impacted. In France, the Basque Coast and the Burgundy region also saw power cuts.

Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General – on Sudan

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the recent attacks by the Rapid Support Forces in Aj Jazirah State amidst escalating violence across Sudan.

The Secretary-General is appalled by reports of large numbers of civilians being killed, detained and displaced, acts of sexual violence against women and girls, the looting of homes and markets and the burning of farms. Such acts may constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law. Perpetrators of such serious violations must be held accountable.

The Secretary-General notes with alarm that the humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to worsen, with hunger and disease continuing to spread and half of the population in need of aid. He demands that all parties to the conflict facilitate safe, rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access to all civilians in need in Sudan, through all necessary routes, in line with their obligations under international humanitarian law.

The Secretary-General renews his call for a ceasefire to spare Sudanese civilians from further harm. The Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General will continue to engage the parties and all relevant stakeholders to de-escalate the conflict and explore modalities to strengthen the protection of civilians.

What’s happening in Sudan?
Sudan is facing a humanitarian catastrophe. Heavy fighting broke out in the capital, Khartoum, in April 2023, and quickly extended throughout the country. A year later, the conflict continues to threaten the health and well-being of Sudan’s 24 million children, pushing already vulnerable families deeper into hardship.

Even before the current conflict, humanitarian needs across Sudan had reached record levels. Now, millions of children have been forced to flee their homes, making Sudan the biggest child displacement crisis in the world. Civilian infrastructure across Sudan has been decimated, leaving children and communities without essential services like clean water and basic health care. Meanwhile, the loss of family income and the socioeconomic fallout from the war are proving devastating to the well-being of children, depriving them of vital resources and opportunities for their futures.
