Field Notes 01

Over the past 10 years, I’ve returned to The Gambia time and again, documenting different communities and the stories that shape life along the River Gambia. One of those stories led me to the women of the TRY Oyster Women’s Association.

Spending time with them reminded me how deeply connected everything is. The mangroves are more than a landscape they protect the coastline, provide a home for wildlife, improve water quality, and make the oyster harvest possible. In return, the women care for the mangroves, harvesting seasonally and helping restore the ecosystem that sustains their livelihoods. It is a relationship built on mutual dependence, where the health of the environment and the well-being of the community are inseparable.

This is the kind of long-form documentary work I want to continue making. These are a few early frames from an ongoing project.

Portrait from Wenchi, Ethiopia. 2026

I was walking through Wenchi with a group of photographers and filmmakers when I spotted this man. Before I’d even spoken to him, I could already see the portrait in my head.
I walked over and asked if I could photograph him. When he smiled and said yes, I was absolutely buzzing.

The people I met around Wonchi Crater Lake really stayed with me. Spending time there left me wanting to come back, slow down, and get to know the community beyond a passing visit. There’s something about that part of Ethiopia that I can’t quite put into words.

Then again, I’ve only scratched the surface of this incredible country. The more I travelled, the more I realised how many stories are still waiting to be told.
