A spring visitor to Abisko, the Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus).

Every year they return to the Arctic when much of the snow has melted from the valleys and plateaus, where they hunt mostly lemmings and voles and begin the breeding season.

Three days ago I went up into the mountains looking for them and found a pair. The male — the one in the photo — came a bit closer to us after a while of waiting.

Such a beautiful sight 🤍

One of the many amazing nights we had during the season. It was late September, and the lake wasn’t frozen yet. We had beautiful autumn colors and really stunning dark skies. 🌌

Now the midnight sun is almost here, and we already have 24 hours of daylight, making it impossible to see the northern lights until the end of August, when the darkness returns to the Arctic Circle.

I can’t wait for the night to come back, but it’s also time to enjoy the constant daylight, explore, and look for wildlife.

Sunset with the wolves 🌲🐺

After four days of waiting, the last evening finally came—the time to head back home from the forest. Just as darkness settled in, three wolves appeared.

One of them came closer than the others and lingered for a few quiet minutes.

Such a magical experience—seeing them roam freely through the forest and hearing the whole pack howl into the night.

Sunrise in the middle of a black grouse lek. We woke up at 04:00 to reach this place where males gather every spring—displaying, calling, and fighting for dominance. Females move quietly around them, choosing a mate before disappearing again.

It’s amazing to see the behaviour of those birds during the spring 🌲

The Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is one of the largest owls in the world.

Last night, after a few hours of waiting, I was able to photograph this owl at night for the first time. The encounter lasted less than a minute, but it was amazing. 🤍

Signs that spring is here: sunny days, melting snow in Abisko, and swans slowly returning to the swamps for the Arctic summer. Foxes run across the lake, wrapping up their mating season.

Life is finally coming back after the long, dark winter ☀️

Last night gave us an unreal show — a low crescent moon on the horizon and the northern lights reflecting in the open water of the Kalix River, right at the start of spring.

A feast in the Ofotfjorden 🦦🐟

Today I was lucky enough to witness an incredible moment in the waters of Narvik. An Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) in its stunning Arctic habitat.

I watched it dive and emerge triumphant with a Lemon Sole (flatfish) clamped in its jaws. These masters of the deep can stay submerged for up to 5 minutes and dive to depths of 15 meters to hunt!

To survive the freezing Arctic waters, they possess one of the densest fur coats in the animal kingdom, with a 50,000 to 80,000 hairs per square centimeter! This trap of air keeps their skin completely dry even while hunting in the deep.
