❤️ Some portraits tell you what someone looks like. The best ones tell you who they are.
When I photograph people, I love to make the location part of their story. Not just a pretty backdrop, but a place that means something. A place that helps tell the story of a life.
These two have shared a love for hunting for more than 15 years. Countless mornings in the forest, muddy boots, quiet moments, successful days and not-so-successful days. So where better to photograph them than right here, surrounded by the woods they know so well? 🌲🐾
One thing I love about adding flash on location is that it allows me to create the image I see in my mind no matter what the weather decides to do. Bright sunshine, heavy clouds, deep shade, it doesn’t matter. Instead of adapting my vision to the light, I can shape the light to fit the story.
For this session I used just an and a white umbrella. That’s it. The best part? The entire lighting setup fitted into a small backpack.

My goal with these kind of locations portraits is always to get the images to look as close as possible to what my eyes are seeing in camera so that I can add some magic in post. I use flash to enhance what is already there, not to make it look “flashy.”
