For a month or so I’ve seen a somewhat small red tail with a white tip disappear into the bushes or two glowing eyes looking at me only to close and seemingly not to be opened again until several nights later. I’m no stranger to foxes. I bump into them most nights but almost exclusively in town where they inherit the streets when humans have gone to bed. Despite seeing the forest full of tracks in snow during winter I very seldom see the foxes themselves so to get a glimpse of cubs in the woods makes me excited.
I decided to find a natural hide in the woods and spent two late evenings sheltered by trees and rocks with a view over a meadow that over the years has gotten very important to me.

First night there was no luck. The wind changed and spread my scent all over the field and no animals showed up in front of me.

Second night I got lucky. After an hour or two I hear light footsteps in the dry leaves and I am quite sure it’s a fox from the rhythm of the sound. The only problem is that it’s late, the light is low even in the open and the fox approaches me from the side in the shadow of the dense canopy above. Nevertheless I manage to take a few pictures. They may be noisy but i still like them. It was such a beautiful and relaxed fox. It stuck around for probably 15-20 minutes but most of the time lying behind rocks. It seems newly awaken - walking around sniffing, stretching and slowly coming to life.
As I hadn’t heard anything for quite some time I figured it had moved on and gathered my things before standing up and I heard it take off from probably 5-10 meters away and disappear into the woods. It had probably laid down there to either get a better look at me or just to relax.
Another beautiful encounter.

Öland - Where half of my genes comes from.
The northern part tend to never leave us disappointed when it comes to weather. No matter how much it rains the sunset always seems to be strikingly colorful.

Young lynx hunting mice and plays in the late hours of today.
I had the pleasure of spending around 40 minutes with this beauty.

(No sounds since it was way dark and my camera hunted for focus quite a bit and the sound is a bit annoying)

Storks are to me not the most common of birds and they might not look that special when they wade through shallow waters looking for food... But when they spread their wings and take off its as if a small plane suddenly emerged out of nowhere.

A beautiful and cold evening in the woods.
People ask me how often I come across lynxes and since I met my first one the average has been one meeting every three months. My last sighting was in January so today was a good day for another meeting.
Sadly it wasn’t one of the photogenic ones but to spend time with wild lynx is always amazing.
I am happy to see that the roe deers are slowly coming back after months of absence due to heavy deforestation the past year or so. Hopefully the lumbering is over for now and the foreseeable future... Let the animals come back, please.
Luckily the lynxes haven’t seemed to be that badly affected by the clear cuts so far. They’ve probably changed their paths a bit but they don’t seem ready to abandon the area which I am very grateful for.

Looking forward to spring in the woods now.

To try to capture wildlife in their natural environment means tons of waiting... And I don’t mind that at all. Few things are as relaxing as to just sit there in the greenery surrounded by beautiful trees and having birds come by to check out the fool sitting there thinking he’ll get accompanied by one of ‘his’ cats.
Truth is that I feel pretty lucky being able to just sit there even if none of the larger animals of the forest decide to join me.
I understand why hunters cherish this so much. There are a few differences between hunters and photographers though.
Some disadvantages for the photographer are that one have to take into consideration direction of light, backgrounds, foregrounds, composition and last but not least - the distance. A photographer needs to get way closer than a hunter to get a good ‘shot’.
The advantages to be a photographer rather than a hunter though are some quite pleasant ones. You can ‘shoot’ the same animal several times and every time you get a new trophy to hang on your wall if you wish and it’s also legal at any time of the year.
Buuut until the inhabitants of the forest come to me I don’t mind just watching the trees.
