Blending in
As the great grey owl of Öland has decided to return to its hunting grounds it used earlier in the summer after approximately a months absence I've also returned.

Outside of a minor incident yesterday where I kneeled down in a seed tick cluster and promtly panicked and missed a really cool dive shot, the outings have been very fun and I hope to capture more behaviour before it decides to dissappear again.

Shorebirds! Always a fun time of the year when in late summer these arctic breeding birds start their journeys south, some as far as Africa. This year we had conditions that weren't exactly favourable so many of the more vibrant adult birds never stopped on their usual spots. But now a bunch of juvenile and birds molting into their winter plumages are resting and eating. I have been going on a few occasions, trying to time calm wind and overcast to get a chance at high key images, which is what I prefer on this limestone beach

Hopping on this eclipse train while it's trending...

I had a few ideas scouted, of which none really worked out. I ended up on the southern tip of Öland and decided to aim for some bird in flight with the eclipse arc. During "peak" eclipse it was covered by the clouds that grew thicker by the minute. I still got some shots I'm happy with. All and all, a challenging but very fun shoot.

Now I have a itch for malaga next year...

Grumpy? Tired? Not sure, but very cooperative at least. Many people have driven far to see this very friendly and unbothered GGO in south east Sweden and I continue to come back to it, it helps that I live only 25 minutes away. The shorebirds STILL haven't arrived in their usual spots for resting, maybe this entire season will pass without any opportunities.

I'm starting to plan what to do on the 12th when there's a 80% something eclipse. Do you have any plans?

Great grey owl from last evening, I was standing on the path when it came out from it's hiding spot, mobbed by European Robins and other woodland songbirds, I could not fit the bird into the frame of my 400mm prime even when I tried to back up the slope.

So this is a three image composite/panorama to fit it all in the frame, and even then I feel that I should've taken slightly more of the frame....and probably stopped down to get it all in focus. Live and learn. One day the adrenaline won't make me give up all I've learned about composition.

No AI or generative fill was used, just a handheld panorama blended in Photoshop with a brush.

At this time of the year it's time to look for shorebirds who stop by to feed on their way south. Yesterday we had a forecast of 30mm+ rain and strong winds which I had hoped would push some birds into my preferred area to photograph. No luck as the waterline was too high, but a lot of swallows foraged in the wind, picking insects of who had taken shelter from the strong winds.

This is a sand martin and a first for me at this location. Now I've seen all three swallow species in Sweden at this location and also our only swift.

Hopefully the water level goes down a bit soon so the dunlins and others come in to feed.

As I shared on my Instagram story, this was a very surreal experience. I was actually going to hold onto this image for a while and post it later so there wouldn’t be a huge commotion in the forest, but that seems to be inevitable. Even the radio asked if I had an image to use for the accompanying web-article.

There has been a lot of birdwatchers there today trying to find it and a lot of them have been successful this morning, and of course last evening. Watching such a large bird move silently through the forest is a surreal experience. I hope that the owl finds enough peace and calm to allow it to hunt at night and that we as observers give it the respect needed. When I was walking in the woods I heard a lot of voles and mice so there is plenty of food to go around and it can stay for a long time unless it feels too disturbed.

I've been doing a few failed scouting attempts at my usual shorebird-spot the past days. Probably still a little early and the water level has been a bit too high. But I hope to soon get out there and find hundreds of dunlins feeding along the shore on the exposed limestone slabs.

On Saturday I heard a juvenile greater spotted woodpecker call out from a small woodland, pretty central and not too far from where I live. Investigating it showed that there was a nest with two juveniles ready to fledge only three meters above the ground.

I spent most of Sunday and also Monday evening watching the nest and the constant food deliveries. I found this angle that I really really liked, but the light only stuck around here for maybe 10-15 minutes and no parent came with food during the window during the two outings. I heard from another photographer who I shared the spot to that one juvenile fledged early Monday morning and I assume this one will also be on its way soon.

I'm happy that I found the nest, but a little annoyed that I didn't find it earlier so I could get more opportunities at this angle, hoping for a food delivery at the final light of the day.

Now it's time to shift focus towards shorebirds swifts and swallows

I was surprised to say the least when I heard the branches above me rustle as one of three owlets descended and landed on a fallen log, just a few meters from me.

I VERY slowly moved in a circle around it so I could get some distance to the background and also be able to focus my lens. No tripod, of course... But I thought that maybe the backpack could work in a pinch.

At 1/10th of a second with ISO at 7200 at f/2.8 you can safely say the gear was pushed to the limits 😅 but that's when the cool stuff happens
