I have had a fantastic start to my birding year in 2026 with several bird species I seldom get a chance to photograph, especially the Eurasian bittern (Rördrom) a heron species that spend most of its time in the reed where it is incredibly difficult to spot. However this time one flew above the reed and I managed to get a photo of it before it disappeared again 😅

I have also been fortunate to have 7 Horned larks (Berglärka) run up fairly close to me as I was avoiding sitting in geese excrement at Bunkeflostrand and last but not least the Long-eared owls (Hornuggla) and Bohemian waxwings (Sidensvans) that are mostly only seen during the winter months down here in Skåne

Two weeks ago I was very lucky with several Hen harrier (Blå Kärrhök) encounters! One of my absolute favourite birds of prey, especially the males pale blue greyish colouration that I just find so appealing!

These photos are from two of my favourite locations to photograph at Falsterbo at the southwestern tip of Skåne and Löddesnäs on the west coast!

Both are excellent places to visit, especially during the winter months

Last week we had some beautiful weather in southern Sweden, so I decided to head to Falsterbo and walk around Måkläppen in search for some overwintering waders.
It did not disappoint with loads of Dunlins (Kärrsnäppa) running along the shore with an occacional Sanderlings (Sandlöpare) in the groups.
At the furthers point there was an unexpected wader a Purple sandpiper (Skärsnäppa)! A new lifer for me and overall a very nice start for my birding year 😊

Photo series of a juvenile Hen harrier (Blå kärrhök)

Spent an afternoon enjoying some nice warm September sun at Vombs ängar, when I spotted a juvenile hen harrier flying in the distance. So I took the opportunity to find a little more secluded spot on a downward slope in hope that it would eventually pass by.

And behold after about an hour it came around the hill flying over the sunk down meadow. It did not even look like it noticed me as it slowly flew past me to the opposite side of the meadow.

A short photo burst sequence of a Bearded reedling (Skäggmes) taking flight from a reed stalk.

Spent the morning at Silvåkra walking along the footbridge in hope of seeing this bird species. It wasn't long until I could hear their typical flight call. However, actually spotting them in the reed is a different story 😅

But after about an hour or so I managed to spot this female perching just by the edge of the reed field 😊

We have had some very warm evenings here in southern Sweden, so I have taken the opportunity to be outside in an attempt to make use of the nice evening light photographing several juvenile Red-backed shrikes (Törnskata).
Most of them have now been left by their parents and are foraging on their own in preparation to migrate south

My second encounter with a European
nightjar (Nattskärra) a nocturnal bird witch means that
it is active during the night feeding on various flying
insects.
There seems to have been a very successful year since
there have been several encounters in the area around
Revinge in southern Sweden.

Had a few quick encounters with a group of European kestrels (Tornfalk) that was hunting for voles around the meadows at Vomb.

Was originally hoping to photograph a male hen harrier that I had spotted the day before but unfortunately it did not return. Nevertheless, I had a nice evening out in the field and I got to see these kestrels incredibly close up 😊

Had a nice evening at Sjötorps ängar photographing these Whinchats (Buskskvätta) in beautiful evening light. There were loads of juvenile birds catching insects around the various shrubs along the meadow.

Overall a nice evening being outside and enjoying the moment 😊

After visiting the Bee-eaters in Maglarp I decided to go down to Falsterbo for some additional birding. The weather was quite intense with +30 C and very harsh sunlight but I got to see 3 migrating Honey buzzards but no much more. I stilled snapped some pictures though 😊

1&2: Wood sandpiper (Grönbena, Tringa glareola)
3&4: Northern lapwing (Tofsvipa; Vanellus vanellus)

Decided to visit the European bee-eaters (Biätare, Merops apiaster) at Maglarp sandtag. It was great to see these beautiful birds back again in Sweden. Soon they will be migrating south and hopefully return next year 😊
