I have recently begun working on my photography project, which will hopefully also become an exhibition. (I have created both a public page and an Instagram account if you would like to follow the progress: NoPhobia Project and nophobia.project)
NoPhobia is a project that explores the relationship between fear, perception, and the image’s ability to reshape experience. Through photographic arrangements in which snakes are placed alongside everyday objects and within unexpected contexts, cultural notions of danger and avoidance are challenged.
The project emerges from ophidiophobia, the fear of snakes, and engages with the photographic ability to frame and reframe its subject.
The images function as an aesthetic form of exposure, allowing the viewer to choose their own degree of approach, while creating a new point of contact between the individual and what is otherwise avoided. The perspective shifts from instinctive aversion toward curiosity and presence. When the context is reframed, the experience itself also changes.
Reptiles are among the most misunderstood animals, often burdened by myth, symbolism, and cultural fear. Through my photography, I intend to challenge these misconceptions and create a meeting point between the viewer and the subject. The intention is not to provoke, but to reduce distance, to present the animal beyond stereotype and thereby counteract the prejudice and hostility often directed toward a species which is rarely given the opportunity to be regarded with dignity.
[DISCLAIMER: Photo sessions are typically conducted during routine health inspections or scheduled habitat maintenance, and each individual participates only for a limited time. Snakes are always handled in close proximity to their vivariums, except for educational purposes or in specific situations where it is deemed necessary. Should any animal show signs of discomfort, it is immediately returned to its enclosure. I strive to follow all available safety precautions before, during, and after each assignment in order to avoid additional stress. The wellbeing and safety of the animals are always my highest priority.]
