IT’S INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY WEEK!! 🤩🤩🤩
I celebrated by hanging out in Arches National Park International Dark Sky Park with some of my favorite dark sky people 🥰 look how small we are compared to Orion! What are your plans to celebrate the night?

This is a single exposure image that I experimented a bit with some star reduction using starxterminator!

It was a new experience for me to not only ice skate in the dark on the frozen Baltic Sea, but also to set up my camera entirely while balancing on skates. ⛸️📷

Somehow I managed to stay upright the whole time, but I did lose all feeling in my feet by the end! 🥶

Skating is already pretty scary to begin with, doing it only under starlight was at first pretty terrifying. ✨

I felt like I could skate directly into a hole in the ice at any time.

But after a while, and reminding myself that I had skated the exact same route during the day, I was able to relax and fully feel how magical it was to be gliding along the ice, skating on a thin layer between deep waters and endless dark skies. 🌌❄️

Aurora, Kiruna, and the ice hotel captured on color film! I always feel like I have 0 idea what I’m doing when it comes to taking night photos on film, so when they come out it truly feels like magic. To get this aurora shot I set my camera on a tripod, realized that I had forgotten my bulb timer release, so just held the shutter down with my finger until the vibe felt right. It was probably around 5-10 seconds :) 400 iso film on a canon ae1 with a 50mm lens at 1.8

It is always such a nice surprise when shots you take on film actually work out. 🎞️📷 It feels like little miracles every time 🥰 I was ecstatic to see how beautiful the blood moon looked on film! And here are a few other shots from my time in sweden so far - Sandhamn island, James Turrell’s Outside Insight, and some star trails in a puddle 🖤✨ all taken with a Canon AE1 on Kodak 400

It has been quite the transition moving from one of the darkest places in the world, with easy access to the stars, to now living in a big European capital surrounded by light (and a lot of clouds!) I felt a bit lost for a while - it’s hard to find my center without being able to look up at a starry night sky. But luckily - Stockholm - while a big city with considerable light pollution, also is actually pretty conscious of darkness as well. And just an hour south of town, with a little help, I was able to find the stars again 🖤🌌

I guess it’s world photography day! There isn’t much else in the world that brings me more joy than photography. So here’s to you, amazing camera! Thank you for being a vessel for me to express myself and find beauty in the world. 💚📷🥰

As I sit here 5 hours early for my flight to Sweden - I have some time to reflect on this next big step I’m taking in my life. This photo I think shows it well. This is an image of the Tucson light pollution seen from Mt Lemmon. It’s bad and unnecessary but also has a beauty to it that I sometimes hate to admit. But this is why I am choosing to study lighting design, because I do see the beauty and wonder in light - just as in darkness. And through my years of working to promote and protect darkness I’ve realized that it always comes down to light in the end. So I’m really excited to start this new adventure of learning about light. And hopefully by understanding light I can more eloquently speak for darkness.

Image taken on cinestill 800 iso film with a canon AE1 and 50mm lens at f2.8. Long exposure shots capture still objects, but not dark moving objects, so you can only see my ghostly silhouette as I stood still after walking into and out of the frame.
