Magnus Clarén, Photographer

Magnus Clarén, Photographer Official page for Swedish-based photographer Magnus Clarén I've been photographing since 1998 when an old friend and my father introduced me to it.

I borrowed dads old analogue Canon AE-1 and started capturing pieces of the world on paper. Over the years I've gone through a few different cameras but they have mostly been Canons since I find myself most comfortable with their handling. I have consciously worked towards not getting stuck in a niche but rather develop in as many areas of photography as possible. Also, since a few years back I ta

ke on freelance-jobs here and there, mostly in wedding- and portrait-photography but I'm open to discussion if anyone has a photo-idea you'd like me to take on.

The theme for the competition this month was "Between Light and Darkness", so I got the idea of a person in a moral dilemma being influenced by their good and bad conscience.

So to the crux of who could embody these roles. I had worked with Lis on several occasions before, and with Kerstin's daughter on one occasion so I started by checking if they were on board and they jumped at the idea, and I also got Kerstin herself to agree to be the hesitant human.

So we set a date, met up in the studio and set to work. In the limited space available, I tried to set the light so that there was a gradient between soft light on the good conscience and hard, contrasty light on the bad conscience. Add to that some work in post production to further enhance the image and bring the message across, and the final result turned out even better than I dared hope!

The deadline for this month's competition in my local photography club was drawing ever closer and I needed an entry, so I decided to reshoot a splash-shot I took over ten years ago.

After lugging an aquarium to the studio and laboriously filling it via a 1-litre jug, I got to set up the scene and this shot was by far my favourite because of the difference between the "funnels". And to think that difference is caused by mere microseconds, it really boggles the mind!

It's been a while, and I'm still trying to find my footing, but the result of yesterday's shoot turned out too good not to post;

The photography group I'm a member of have regular photo-competitions and the theme for this month was "Long Exposures". I haven't worked with that for a long time, so I welcomed the challenge.

I contaced Lis Holmberg and asked if she'd model for me, and yesterday evening we set to work.

There are LED-lights illuminating her through the entire motion, which causes the vague trace in the background, and when she hit the desired poses I fired flashes from the left and right to freeze the motion.

I am very pleased with how it turned out, and it feels good to at least be somewhat back in the "creative photography"-sphere again!

Given the state of the world as it is, very little new material is being produced. Hence, when my friend Linda Sjöjungfru Ågren asked me for previously unpublished photos from old shoots, I happily dove into my archive!

These photos are from two different shoots, one (as is plainly obvious) shot by Den Lille Havfrue (The Little Mermaid) in Denmark and the other one is from a beach close to Linda's childhood home. Both were taken to show off her (at the time) new silicone fin so Mermaid Athiraa of Sweden is looking better than ever!

As always, a pleasure, Linda is always a joy to work with!

I was contacted a while back by my childhood friend Andreas Larsson and he said that he and Erika Ralfsson had been talking about doing a fitness-/workout themed shoot in the style of the photos I shot of Andreas a couple of years back to document his form. So Erika spoke to the manager of the gym where she works out and we got the green light to shoot last saturday afternoon.

We all arrived on site as the rain threatened menacingly, I explained the work process we'd need to utilize in order to get these shots, as well as brief them about the only two shots I had ready in my head. When that initial brief was done, I set up my equipment and we got to work!

It took the better part of three hours to shoot these photos but we are extremely pleased with the results, and I'd like to give a special thank you to Kristian Klintbo of Meihem Workout for giving us access to his gym, these pictures would not have been possible without it!

I've been feeling a bit of a lack of inspiration lately, so I decided to do something about it. I issued a challenge to a photographer aquaintance of mine, Fotograf Anna Hallander;
* She shoots me, I shoot her.
* The model decides the place, the time and the outfit.
* The photographer doesn't learn of the place or the outfit until the day of the shoot, forcing them to improvise and think on their feet.
* The photographer should strive to take photos so different from their usual work that an observer would be hard pressed to point them out in a lineup.

She gladly accepted and last weekend she shot me and today I shot her. When I arrived on scene, I was met with her in full fantasy war-gear and mounted atop her horse, so I was really pushed outside my comfort zone! :-D

I very much enjoyed being both in front of and behind the camera in this eneavour, and I'm looking forward to working together again.

In these times of isolation we all amuse ourselves as best we can. For me, a lot of time has been devoted to the care for, and study of, my animals, which is why I noticed that one of the cockroaches in my colony of Blaberus craniifer (Death's head cockroach) had recently moulted into it's final, adult form. So recently, in fact, that there was still ecdysone-fluid on the newly unfolded wings!

Naturally, I made a beeline straight for my camera, mounted the macro-lens and ring flash and got to work. Since I got to work on it so fast, the internal structure of the wings, the prothorax (back shield), the face and the antennae is still visible since the hardening process hasn't yet set in, the process that with the hardening of the new exoskeleton also makes it opaque.

I decided that the pouring picture I used on my Lagavulin composite was too good a photo in it's own right not to do something with, so I sat down with it tonight and elected to go with a black and white photo to bring out the structure of wood, bark and hands, but I left the colour in the whisky because I felt the rest being in black and white gave the warm, delicious amber of the drink all the more space.

Tonight, I rigged my studio equipment in my dad's garage and then we set to work shooting some photos of whisky- and vodka bottles for a competition we aim to participate in. I elected to go for a composite shot featuring Lagavulin, as the dark lighting I had in mind felt appropriate for an Islay whisky.

Since entries need to be submitted before Tuesday, once I got home I set to work with the post producing right away and this is the result!
