It is early morning, and the warm glimmer of the rising sun is gently illuminating the reed in the foreground. The cormorant is such a magnificent specie. With its prehistoric-looking features it is, in my opinion, one of the most charismatic birds around.

I have a spot down by the ocean that is one of my favourite places to go to.
Long before the sun rises above the horizon I walk down and quietly crawl into my hide. Moments later, as the first light gracefully touches the distant sky, the coast wakes up and comes alive.
This is when I truly appreciate my life, and in the difficult times we are living, I am reminded of why this world is worth fightning for.

Northern fulmar in the afternoon light. Living up to 40 years, they have developed a special defence system; a secrete oil that is stored in the stomach, can be sprayed out of their mouths to fend off predators. It also acts as a nutritious food source for their chicks, as well as for adults on longer journeys.

Seagulls soaring through the air at Valasnös bird cliff in Hellnar, just south of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, Iceland.
Hellnar is a very special place, that greets the visitor with spectacular rock formations inhabited by thousands of sea birds. To reach this spot I climbed up through a narrow cave tunnel that had just enough room for me and my backpack.
I was completely mesmerized by the patterns I found among the rock walls, once created by fire, and still to this day being shaped by water.

The Puffin can reach a flying speed of 88 km/h by rapidly beating its wings, reaching up to 400 beats per minute. When diving for fish it will use the wings in an almost flying-like motion and operate its feet as a rudder.
