A little over a year ago, I started a project to photograph Hennessy, a Miniature American Shepherd.
Usually, my Watch Me Grow sessions run for around 8 months. But with Hennessy, we decided to wait a little longer. We wanted to see just how much bigger she would get — and eventually, we realised… this is it. This is how big Hennessy is going to be. 😄
Every month, her hooman would bring her into the studio, and I got to photograph her all over again.
Month after month, I literally watched her grow up.
The tiny puppy gradually became the beautiful adult dog you see here. And because I was there throughout that journey, seeing the transformation happen one session at a time, this project felt especially meaningful to me.
When we finally reached the end, I had this little sense of accomplishment. Not just because we completed the project, but because we created something that can never really be recreated — a visual record of Hennessy growing up.
I’ve always loved doing long-term projects like this. There’s something satisfying about seeing all those individual photographs come together to tell one story.
And if you have a puppy, document them.
Their puppy face, their tiny paws, those awkward proportions, the way they change almost every few weeks…
It all disappears much faster than you realise.
One day, you’ll look back and wonder how your tiny puppy ever became that big.
