A repeat drink-driving offender who caused a fatal road accident will continue serving an 11-year jail term after both he and the prosecution appealed against his sentence.
The incident happened on 23 April 2023.
After attending a birthday party at Turf Club Road and drinking w**e, the man drove his BMW M3 with his two young children inside.
On a road with a 70kmh speed limit, forensic analysis found he travelled at around 111 to 113kmh before accelerating to around 118 to 122kmh.
He then collided with a pedestrian, who died at the scene. His two children suffered minor injuries.
A blood sample subsequently showed 145µg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The man had previous convictions for careless driving and drink driving from 2015.
He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and drink driving.
The lower court imposed an aggregate sentence of 11 years' jail, a S$12,000 fine and a 15-year disqualification from driving after his release.
Both sides appealed over the jail sentence for dangerous driving.
The High Court found merit in parts of both appeals, but concluded the resulting sentence would still be roughly 11 years and therefore left it unchanged.
When someone has already been convicted of drink driving before, are Singapore's penalties strong enough to deter them from ever doing it again?
