The government can become stronger through the support and helping hands from its own people and on the other hand, people can become stronger through their government’s support.
Let me give you an example. Some years back around 2011, the late prime minister of Ethiopia Miles Zenawi once told his people that for the country to be great with surplus food security, they must have their own stable and reliable waters sources as well as electricity.
For this reason, Ethiopia must build Africa’s largest dam that will supply both water and electricity but there was a huge problem, lack of capacity to build it as capital was insufficient.
Miles Zenawi went to borrow money from international community and IMF.
This didn’t sit well with Egyptian government as well all know, Egypt is a desert country that entirely depends upon water from River Nile for survival. The government of Egypt instigated and initiated a sabotage by influencing the IMF and international community to deny loans to Ethiopia. Ethiopia in response told the Egyptian people that they have been using the water from the River Nile for free in centuries yet Ethiopia Highlands alone contributes 85% volume of water in the Nile annually.
Mr Zenawi returned back to Ethiopia fuming terming it an act of insurgent and assassination of humanity. He immediately called for a national rally to address the situation to the people since he made a promise that’s now seems to be failure. The people got so angry and loss the sense of brotherhood to the Egyptians and they asked how much the dam would cost.
The prime minister told them that he needs to sit down with team of engineers and experts to design architectural plans and it approximate cost.
Afterwards he returned with the planned project with a mind-blowing of 6 billion dollars 💵. To his surprise, the Ethiopians told him not worry because they are going to pledge the money. In a miraculous gesture, the people rallied behind their hero and called for national fundraising and managed to raise not only 6 billion but 8 billion dollars.
The government named the project as (GERD) Grand Ethiopians Renaissance Dam. The project was fully funded by the citizens and took 13 years for its completion. Now this the project, this GERD as shown in the photographs below.
This is largest dam in Africa and can generate electricity to many countries in the region.
As you may wonder why there’s a political unrest in Ethiopia, now you know. Egypt is playing the dirty game behind as a counter-attack against the people of Ethiopia but the AU, EU and even the international community are just silent because they have been defeated by the people of Ethiopia.
In comparison to my country, the 8 billion dollars that was pledged would have ended in one cone-man’s stomach and we move on as if nothing happened. Indeed our country has been sieged by money mongers and people who value their stomach in expense of the nation.
People are a big source of income to the government but if the government can’t pay salaries for almost a year, now tell where will government’s revenue and tax come from? How will the nation build and maintain its economy?
Learn from the neighborhood how things are done. Until a government of the people, for the people and by the people comes to power, your 5 vice president will not be equivalent to Moulana Kalisto!
